Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I hate the facotry oem bridgestones in every way. I have about 32,000 miles on them and although they have some tread left, that tread is worthless on anything but dry warm pavement (not good in a wet winter in Northern VA)
I don't want to spend a fortune, but I want some good tires.
I am currently leaning towards the yokohama avid v4s
They appear to be about $100/tire with a 60k mile warranty
I actually have had good luck on my 1998 Camry with Hankook brand tires. I run the Mileage Plus GT on both that and my wife's Sienna (in appropriate sizes of course) I have 306K on the camry and usually get 80K or more out of the Hankooks. (they are "100K mile" rated) I drive mainly highway, of course.
To my surprise, neither of the two sets I've run (I'm on my 3rd set) are slick or hard. They corner well (for a 98 I4 Camry ) and are reasonable priced around here in both sizes we use. Don't expect them to make your car a sports car, but I have found them to be very good in all the conditions we have in Kansas (up to -10 below in winter, ice, snow etc and then over 110 in the summer)
My 2005 SE has some Pep Boys house brand tire that the dealer put on it before I bought it . I hate them. Slick as teflon on acceleration or on ice/snow. As soon as I have an excuse to ditch them I will be getting a new set and I've only had them a little over 45 days.
The Bridgestone Turanza EL400's on my 05 se v6 are the worst tires for the winter. I had to replace my front tires this year after only 24k on them. bald as can be. The snow here in New York has turned to ice so sliding has become the norm and these tires dont grip for sh*%!!!! They should have a recall on these tires but that will never happen. I do agree though that in summer weather they rock when it comes to grip and performance. but summer is a long time away
^ i have the turanza with about 20% left on my accord and i actually think they are alot better than the michelin MXV4 that come stock with the camry. The turanza's in my mind are really good tires.
Anywhoo correct me if im wrong but the yokohamas are more performance wise and the versado's are more luxury touring?
Anyways i have the versado's LX on our gen5. We got them the week they came out and we got a amazing deal on them. Comparing to the stock michelins mxv4's they are superb! Better traction, QUIETER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, smoother ride and overall better tire. Im not sure about the Yoko's since ive never had them or been in a car equipped with them but the Versao's are great tires.
On my 2004 Camry SE i4 manual tranny, it came standard with Michelin Energy MXV4 S8 - V rating 215/60/16 and they're really good in snow. I'm used to driving with snow tires during our winters and these tires are just gripping like crazy.
I know they will fit and the car will roll on down the road, but doesn't the H have a softer sidewall? I like the way the SE handles, a little stiff, and that is why I bought it. I don't want to put H rated tires on and have a soft sidewall and therefore softer handling in the curves.
I know it is not a sports car, however, I don't want to soften the handling to save $15/tire.
Since your SE came with V rated tires, just stick to them.
I was really looking for a technical answer or for someone who went with h rated tires on an SE to say there was no difference or they noticed softer handling more tire squeal or something.
Sure going with the V rated is most likely what I will do, but it was just curiosity if anyone had real life experience switching down to H
It looks like either tire I go with will be fine. I found a few posts in an Acura forum and a few more in a Passat forum about both tires and everyone that has had either seems really happy with them and would buy them again.
Now it is time to hunt down the best price and let money decide which I get
yokohama avid V4s or H4s
great all weather grip and great handling tire...also very quiet, and they wear great....i love these tires and ill never get anything else....
i have the V4s on my 03 SE and i love them!
The first time I changed the tires on my 2003 SE, the tire store put H rated tires on my car, even thought they told me they had put the required Z rated tires on. The tire store was owned by my longtime neigbour, so I didn't check his work. On the high speed off ramp near my house (east bound 407 to the east bound 401), the car pushed - wouldn't turn at 130 km/hr - never had that problem with the original tires. I missed hitting a cement bridge support by inches. I drove right back to the tire store and asked about the tires. My neighbour said 'oh, I put H tires on, you won't notice the difference. We worked things out and I haven't spoken to him since.
