HIDs on 06 Camry

Hi everybody, I recently bought an HID kit for a friend for his 06 camry and we installed it successfully. The only problem is that the light seems to shine straight and is very blinding so we took it off. I tried searching through the forums to see how other members installed it for their 06 camry without doing a retrofit, but I couldn't find much info. Instead, resulted in a few new terms. Does squirrel spotters apply to 06 camry? What is the best option to install HIDs without retrofitting that would not blind other drivers? Thanks!

I ain't no HID expert, but:

Squirrel Spotters apply only to Gen6 mostly cuz of the projectors.
Other than retrofitting your 06, I suggest just aiming your headlights lower. It will decrease illuminated forward viewing distance, but at least you won't cause any accident cuz of your damn glares.
Any HID experts out there, feel free to correct me.

Thanks for the quick reply. That's what I thought too with the squirrel spotters. I did try to move the bulb down but that actually seem to make it more blinding. However, in contrast, if I move the bulb upwards, it seemed like a better option.

Do NOT put kits in reflector housings! Either do a Projector retro or keep the halogens. Go to WWW.HIDplanet.com Become a member on the forums, Go to the University section and READ READ READ.

You can bend the tab for the squirrel spotters or you can mask it off. Just a thin slit.

He has the Gen5 which doesn't have the squirrel spotter because he has halogen housing. Even if he has the Gen6, simply bend the tab of the squirrel spotters is not enough, you will have to cover it up completely.
For gen5, HID kit is a no no. Don't do it.

you could try painting the outer housing flat black to keep the chrome from reflecting any light... but if you're going to open up the housing, might as well retro

+1

Never put HID kits into reflector housings. I'm glad you decided to take it off. That is the smart thing to do. There is no good way to put HID kits into halogen reflector housings. The reflector was designed to reflect light that emits only 800-1000 lumens of light. Because this light is about 25-27% less intense than light from a 4300K HID bulb (which is about 3300 lumens), the light that is reflected is not blinding, and the reflector works fine. But you throw in a bulb that is 4x more intense into the mix, and it WILL blind people because the light will be reflected every which way around the reflector, and eventually, out through the lens on to the sides, into other drivers' eyes, and into the sky, with not much light actually going where you want it to, which is on the ground in front of you. Projectors concentrate this beam in front of you and light up just the road (and in my case, all 5 lanes of freeways and highways lol), and they are cut off at a certain point so as not to blind anyway.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.

Well, it was a gift for a friend for a xmas present so I kinda wish it would work out. But thank you for the advice. It is much appreciated.

Yeah, I understand. That's exactly what I don't want to happen so either I will look into doing a retrofit or possibly a custom shield like recommended. Thank you for your advice!
