5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My parents just bought a new 2008 Camry, and while we were looking at cars, we noticed that many have the same kind of gear shifter than the Camry has. Side-to-side movement of sorts, when switching gears (instead of just forward and backward) - what is the point of it, and does that have a name? This is automatic transmission. I'd just like to find some more information on it (I don't know much about cars).

Huh? I would hope that a Camry has the same kind that a Camry has.
Like JSM said, many cars these days have an automatic transmission that has the capability of changing gears with manual input from the driver. Some cars have paddles (F1 type) but most have the gated shifter as you observed. It is commonly referred to as 'tiptronic' as that was the first popular name for this type of transmission control in a passenger car. The biggest difference is that the one in our Camry isn't a true manual in that you can shift it into manual mode and leave it in 4, but still drive like it's in full automatic and the car will shift on it's own. The preferred scenario (as you will find in other similar systems) is when you put it into manual mode, it will run up to and beyond red-line on the tach without shifting for you providing more of a manual shifting scenario.

That was suppose to be "as", not "then". The sentence would read:

Anyway, so the point of this type of shifter is to allow for manual shifting as well? That's interesting because a friend has a PT Cruiser (I know, I know..) and he has a normal shifter but his also allows for semi-manual shifting (the way that the Camry does, by what you describe). What is the advantage of this system?
No real "Advantage" Think of it as a "Convenience"

Can I ask a different question here or should I start a different thread
What I want to do is disable the locking feature when shifting out of park, and have it lock at 20 kmh instead (at speed, the locking noise is less distinctive). I also want to have it unlock all four doors at the press of the button the first time on the wireless key. I looked in the service manual but I could not find how to do those things without the intelligent tester, is it possible or do I need to ask a dealer?

From what I have seen on here, some people have been able to do it, while others have to take it to the dealer. Hopefully someone will re-post with an answer for you since this subject is kind of "hidden" in the "gear shifter" thread.

Both features that you want are programmable by the dealer.
