Trip Computer

2004 XLE 4cyl Automatic.

Over the course of 8,567 Miles I have averaged 24.90 MPG. The trip computer has determined that I have an average of 30.8 MPG. That's a massive difference and I've read numerous reports of people saying that it's within 1.5 MPG.

If you're wondering why such low mileage, I do a lot of city, rolling through subdivisions at low speeds and extensive idling (Which I have stopped doing about 2 months ago). I had a truck before this and was getting 15mpg so I am quite happy with 25 MPG

Anyways, What the hell is wrong with thing?!? 5.9 MPG is a pretty large gap. I have a certified warranty and unless it falls under the federal emissions warranty I don't think a PCM update will be cheap, if there is even one required.

What do you guys do with yours? Do you reset it after every fillup? I did that for the 2 fill ups and it said I was getting around 50 MPG, I don't remember the exact number because it was so ridiculous. I try to drive by keeping the numbers as high as possible on the "Instant" MPG, but I am starting to think I am doing more harm than good by doing that.

Thanks!

I've had 60 fillups, 23,000 miles - 27.12 mpg avg, 28.71 weighted average trip computer or 1.59 mpg (+5.9%) too optimistic with the trip computer.

The trip computer reading is just a reading off of one fuel injector's fuel usage and miles traveled and a computer calculation.

Reset every fillup and amounts entered in my spreadsheet.

Instant mpg doesn't mean anything. Zero when idling, maxed out when coasting down a hill.
