Camry problems?

I am looking to buy a car that gets a little better gas milage than my 4 Runner( 22 mpg). I really like the looks of the 08 Camry 4 cyl, but after doing a little research, I have some questions. Consumer Reports took this car off of the recommended list and when I look at reviews, I note a lot of references to poor transmission performance in the 2007 models. Is this a legitimate concern? Has the problem been fixed in the 08 models? Are these issued brought up by the domestic mafia that want you to purchase GMs and Fords?

On a side note, I see that most people are getting over 30 mpg on the highway. Is this what most are getting on the 4 cyl?

The tranny issues and the v6 camry was the one taken off Consumer Reports rec list if I recall correctly.

I have the 4cyl engine on my 02 camry and I get less mpg than your 4 Runner.

I just did 24.0 mpg doing mostly city/some hwy driving. At best, I can do 33 mpg on mostly hwy. Though the 6 cyl and 4 cyl Camry's have their issues (tranny slip and pick up lag, respectively), it's still a fun car to drive, if you know how to drive it. My 4 cyl SE turns heads when I drive by. Don't let these reviews deter you from getting what you want. You know you want it

I recommend you rent one for a weekend to see if it will work for you.
It's my opinion that the 4cyl is underpowered, and I love the V6.

If you are getting less mpg than a 4Runner something is wrong

I4 is great. Power is fine for up mountain passes, acceleration is adequate. iIt will do 80-90 mph all day long.

Worst tank in 23,000 miles = 22.71 mpg.

Best tank in 23,000 miles = 33.14 mpg.

Avg for 23,000 miles = 27.12 mpg

I can fill-up at a freeway exit and drive for an hour at 60-65 and hit an indicated 38 mpg on my trip meter which is 36.5 actual mpg....but I don't like driving that slow.
