If you get a cup wrench that fits your preferred filter perfectly, 3" to 6"extension, and a ratchet you should have no filter issues for removal. The crush washers are available at the dealership, but talk to the parts guy - those kind of parts can be had cheaply. I got a half dozen for five bucks with a little conversation.

your dealership should carry removal sockets for oil filters....they make them in equivalent sizes for each of the oem filter sizes...ive been using one on my camry with the toyota 90915-yzzf1 filters for years and ive had no issues with removal....just loosen, let drain for a minute and remove.

I wish all dealers provided that option ... mine says that they don't carry any at all for sale to the public. I was told that their guys buy their wrenches off of the Snap-On truck.

I did take the filter in (90915-YZZF1) to Advance Auto and came back with an AmPro "Cup Type Oil Filter Wrench 65/67 mm 14 flutes - 2 Step." They swear it will work, even though it cross references 90915-03001 & 90915-03004 instead of 09228-06501.

I've read mixed reports about the 65/67mm wrenches on a 90915-YZZF1 filter. It appears that some brands seem to work and others don't without extra effort. One suggestion I read for slippage was to place layers of plastic bags over the cap as needed. Others insist that 65mm wrenches are fine and still others reference 64mm wrenches as being the perfect fit.

However, my husband is not very patient with not having the right tool at the right time and I don't want any problems when he does this for the first time.

If I decide to go for the Assenmacher Toy640 version instead of my $4.50 version from AdvanceAuto, is there a much higher probability of success with little frustration?

I bought the TOY640 for my 09 SE V6. Havent used it yet. Since I get a couple free oil changes, I'll let the dealership change my oil and loosen the oil filter since I know that when it comes off production line/factory, its tightened by ROBOCOP.

I've never - ever (well once on a neighbors truck - he overtightened it himself) had to use an oil filter wrench until I bought our Camry. There wasn't much room for the channel locks, and I didn't want to stab it and make a mess with a new car, so I broke down and got one.

Just make sure the filter is oil free, use a clean rag and put some arse into it.

After putting some oil back into the filter I like to bump the starter a couple of times to help prime the system a little better. The after oil change "knock" gives me jitters...
