air con

My air con went today. If I start my Air con I hear a loud squeal and the car idles super rough. It's almost as if there is too much resistance turning the air con and causing the car to idle rough.

what could it be?

sadly he is probably right - the loud squealing you hear is most likely either the sound of your a/c belt trying to turn a sticking or siezed compressor - OR the a/c clutch is broken and not freewheeling. If you dont remove the belt right away it will just break in a few more miles.

maybe it is just the a/c clutch (the a/c clutch is the pulley part that the belt turns. It is supposed to freewheel when the a/c is OFF and to lock up and turn the compressor when the a/c is ON. ) But either way, remove the belt now or just cut it off, chances are it is no good anymore and it will be getting replaced along with the other parts, when you find out what the problem is.

Ouch. This is going to be big bucks.

My car has 144,000 km, is this normal for A/C to fail now. Is this typical? Or am I just unlucky.

The unfortunate thing is if I use the Windshield defrost the A/C turns on. No option to turn off the A/C.

Anyone have their A/C fail? If yes, what was your mileage.

THe A/C belt is labeled "Dayco made in the USA Toyota" My car is made in Japan and I bought the car used 2 years ago. Would a car made in Japan have a part from the US? The reason I'm asking is to find out whether work was done on the A/C before I took ownership.
