Gen6 Nearly ran over by my camry.. IT WAS IN PARK!

Well, after i washed my car. i fugured i would rev it to redline for the 1st time to see what it sounded like, its my 1st camry with a V6. So standing out of the car, i put my foot on the accelerator. The transmission some how engaged itself into drive for a slpit second or so and lurched forward about 5 inches, almost hitting the garage door. Scared the shit out of me. Should i take it to the dealer and have them look at it?

first, you shouldn't rev the engine in park to redline, its harmful to the engine. It is the second worse type of overrev, only a downshift overrev is worse (m/t only) If you want to hear it a redline, do it while the engine is in a gear and the engine is under load.

Are you sure it was fully in park and the transmission pawl was engaged ? The pawl is the mechanism that physically locks the transmission (and hence the car) from moving. There usually is some backlash, so the car may have moved if the pawl wasn't locked.

If your car was parked on a level surface this may have been the case.

yes, it was fully in park. And it didnt just role, it was like the trans was in drive for a split second. Then it just like lurched as if i slamed on the break. My driveway is on a slant faceing back meaning the car is tilting back, and the car went forward

There is always a little play in the transmission when the car is in park. The engine is transverse mounted and sharply revving it up will cause it to rotate forward...

Do it again, you'll get the same result.

Your question reminds me of a quote/question

A man goes to his doctor and says...

Patient: "It hurts when I do this."

Doctor: "Don't do it then"

But seriously, even if you take it to the dealer and explain what happened, odds are, all they will tell you is to not to rev the engine in park.

As for your car lurching forward, if you are concerned that it's dangerous... don't rev the engine in park- and use the parking brake.
