Woah ... that sux ... being a new car, and getting hit by a trailer? Not getting totaled is really a pain in the ass, because that shit is gonna stay on your carfax and affect your resale value.

Depends on state, many states have a requirement to report to CarFax if the fix costs over $1000 or $2000, and I'm 100% sure $7000+ will definitely go on CarFax, especially if there is an officer there when the accident happened, and a car insurance claim. Unless of course those authorities aren't involved at all.

Well the important thing is that you're ok. Hope you'll get your car situation fixed soon. How many miles did you have?

What others have said though, it sucks not having it totaled. I know when my door had to be replaced, now I can't sell it saying it's never had body work done, which will lower resale value...

Assuming you're not the at-fault party (in which case your policy will probably leave you screwed), be sure to demand compensation for the diminished value of the car after it's repaired. Most companies will fight you on this, but you should be able to collect it. Let's face it, if you try to sell your car, and there's an identical car that has not been repaired, the only way you'll sell your car is to cut the price (ergo, diminished value).

Did any airbags go off? I had very similar damage (but more severe and further forward) from a T-Bone in my 2002 Camry. They got the whole thing repaired and painted, all the while insisting the same thing they're telling you (can be fixed for less than total threshold value). After the work was done, they powered it up only to discover that my side curtain deployment had somehow fried the SRS computer. The $1900 computer was enough added repair value to push the car above the threshold for a total, so the stubborn insurance know-it-all adjuster got to fix the whole car AND then pay me for it. Watch very carefully for supplements that may push up the total repair cost.

Good luck.
