I realize that you get what you pay for, but when it comes to buying rims, is it necessary to buy the name? I've been wheel shopping for most of the winter because I fully intend to get my cam some new shoes when the snow and salt up here in the northeast is gone for the year.
I've come across sites like wheelmax and wheelsnext and found some pretty good deals on rims from brands that aren't as well marketed as other. Is it worth it to throw down $300+ a wheel on a brand like Axis or MRR or am I just as well off buying some wheels for $150-$200 a wheel from a brand like Tork or Exel or ADR?
I am a college student on a budget but I also realize that quality costs money and would rather spend the money on something that is worth it.

As of March 1, another $2200 body shop bill due to deer attack..
Don't think so. At $150 vs $300 a pop, you can change wheels twice and end up at the same total. I like that idea. If you don't have the money to spare, don't pay just for the name but don't forget to asked around who has good experience with lower cost sets before buying.
so if all wheels suck i guess ill just take mine off and slide around on my brake rotors, eh?

Well the difference is having forged wheels and cast wheels... Google both and then let us know about your find... LOL
I have had both, cheap wheels and expensive wheels, and I'll tell you, since I am all about asthetics..... forged wheels give you bragging rights, and that's all that matters to me. Unless you like being laughed at?

what milt said was correct about forged wheels vs. cast. if you got the money to throw down then go for the more expensive, high quality wheel. and no, axis or mrr aren't exactly at the upper echelon of wheels but it's all about your preference and budget.
i thought that 300 per wheel is cheap from the wheels that I would really want but i don't have that kind of money to throw like 1500 per wheel from companies like iforged or junction produce lol. If i'm gonna throw that much down for a wheel, I might as well trade my camry in for a lexus or bimmer.
well i was using those as examples, some that ive come across.. but thank you for the cast and forged difference ill look into it
at least i wasnt asking questions like.. what websites can i buy rims at? or, how can i make my car look exactly like yours?

Don't care about bragging rights - I leave that up to others. No matter how much you spend on anything, their is always something better and more expensive. Of course, a good forged wheel is certainly a no-brainer. But a cheap, low quality forged wheel just to have forged - I don't think so, I rather buy a good quality cast alloy. Rule one: Never spend more than you have. Rule two: Do your research and assess what matters to you (looks, performance, where you drive, how long you will have these, money to spare vs bad ass credit depth..). Rule three: Make the decision you feel comfortable with no matter what others say. Good luck.

I do agree with you. The only good quality cast alloy I could think of are OEM wheels, do you have any links to good aftermarket cast wheels?... What do you consider a cheap forged low quality wheel brand? I know there are many wheel brands out there.
I rock Work and SSR wheels on the 3 of the cars me and my fiance have BTW.

Rule four: no-brainer, whether forged or cast, stay away from curbs and make sure that you dont cheapen out on tires.
trojan: we had the same idea. i originally wanted to get the scara from JP, but i was thinking it didnt really flow well with a camry.
it would also depend what you would be using the wheels for. if it is just to look good and daily drive, then you should be fine with cast wheels. if your purpose is for street racing or whatever means of "spirited" driving, get forged and lightweight.
there will always be a huge difference between a forged and a cast, quality, durability, weight and price. and i do agree with tobeit too.
i used to have raching hart cp035 in my previous car and there is a diff between that and the one im using now, but then again, diff purposes.

Looks like we are all in happy agreement ..not sure though if we helped finding the right footing for our friend here just yet ..maybe some low cost cast alloy and some reasonable forged wheel suggestions (w/ matching tires!). I actually like tirerack for noobies, pretty well educated sales guys and a good selection of main stream rims/tires.
I am running currently Kazera's - cast, but I drive them through winter. Did not want to do that with expensive forged wheels, well - and no racing in winter either :-)
