5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hello everyone, My name is Nick. I'm new to TN. I have been browsing around the Camry posts for some time and decided to join. I drive a 2004 Toyota Camry LE. Great car with no problems. My dad just bought a New 2008 Camry LE in Magnetic Gray color. The car has the JBL Audio package with Bluetooth, Moonroof, and Auto-Dimming Mirror. Its a great car, very smooth, very roomy inside...felt much more comfortable than my 2004 camry. The car is now two weeks old and has 470 miles on it.
After driving this car for the whole two weeks, we noticed some issues with the transmission. I'm pretty sure most of you guys know about this 2007+ camry transmission issues!! So like if I want to get the car over 60MPH, I have to really step on the gas. The engine feels tight above 40mph or especially driving on the freeway. Also when driving at around 40MPH, the transmission tends to automatically shift into overdrive and the car shudders and vibrates.... its really annoying. I thought that Toyota might have fixed this transmission issue for the 2008 camrys. But it seems to me that they didn't. I also read about the "TSB" thing which should take care of this transmission issue. Just wondering if the TSB would fix this problem. We are going to take the car to the dealership this week and see if they can resolve this issue with the TSB. I would love to hear from the new camry owners!!
Other than this transmission issue we love the new camry, the JBL audio system is awesome, the 7 standard airbags... over all the car feels very solid.
I just love my 04 camry...no complaints whatsoever and that is why I told my dad to buy the new camry over the newly redesingned Honda Accord.
Thanks
Nick.

Thanks for the reply. I used the search function and found out a lot of the tranny problems were on the 07 camry's....and the TSB's were mentioned for the 07's. So I was wondering if this TSB would apply for the 08 camrys. By the way this car has a 4cyl engine.

Also, did they offer you the license plates on the spot? We bought a new Camry there last year and they issued the plates instantly (Which seemed odd....)

We like Beaverton Toyota...they have a really good customer service, everyone seems to be friendly over there comparing to the Royal Moore Toyota over in Hillsboro. And our service advisor is a really good guy. We bought 3 Toyota's from Beaverton Toyota.
About 9 months ago when we bought our New Sienna, they did put on the license plates on the spot. I didn't know they were going to put it on...otherwise I would've told them no!!....But this time when we bought the camry...and I told them to not put it on...we didn't get the license plates yet...they said it'll take about 4-6 weeks.
There is another thread on your 08 4cyl transmission problem, it is another problem , not the 07 4cyl problem. its the torque convertor
Ya I just found out about it. The TSB for the 2008 camry says a "Techstream ecu flash reprogramming procedure." I'm not sure if this is connected with the Torque Convertor issue. Hopefully we might be able to get it fixed soon.
Is there really a TSB for the trembling 08 trans? We have the same problem (there is another thread about this problem in the 08 4 cyl) but were not aware of any TSBs. The Toyota people act as though they have never heard of this problem before. Our dealership agrees that there is a problem but says corporate won't act unless there are many complaints. They did replace the torque converter but it is worse, if anything. Suggestions?

I know that currently there are two TSB's for the 08 camry's. I found out from the NHTSA website. I don't know if this TSB - "Techstream ecu flash reprogramming procedure" is meant to fix the transmission issue.
Too bad to hear that your car is not better even after the fix. I say take it back to the dealership and bug them till its fixed.
My 08' LE 2.4L just turned 970 miles and my
AT has no problems so far. Interesting.
BTW I have the DMG color also. Love it!!!
Good to know that your car doesn't have any problems. I thought that there wouldn't be any tranny problems for the 08 camry's. I have an 04 camry which I really love...has had zero problems from day 1...and still going smooth with 55,000 miles on it.
Anyway someone from the service department is going to test drive our camry next monday and then see if he can diagnose the problem. Then we'll see what they are going to do from there.
Besides the tranny problem, I love the car...yes metallic Gray is an awesome color.
Our kids also bought an '08 Camry and say they don't notice a problem. But we have noticed it (though quite a bit less than in our car) when we drive their car. If you haven't noticed it in your car, try driving between about 38 and 42 mph and stay at the same speed (without accelerating more) for a few blocks the way you do when driving on local roads where the limit is about that. We notice it under those conditions, but not if we are, say, on a highway, accelerating until we reach, say, 55 mph. Doing that seems to bypass the problem. We'd be curious to know whether you notice it then. We also noticed it somewhat in the loaner they gave us while they had ours in to change the torque converter -- though, again, less than in ours.
