5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I bought my 07 Camry less than a month ago from Moultrie Motors in Birmingham AL, with 31K on it. Just a brief history, Frank Moultrie owns both a Toyota and a Nissan dealership in Alabama and uses this (Moultrie Motors) as a wholesale dealer's buyer/seller location. I still had the remainder of the 36k warranty until today when i took it to the dealership here in Nashville, TN. I had noticed a small amount of water sitting in the spare tire well along with a whistle in the rear windshield, which i figured was the culprit for the leak. All that said, I dropped my car off and not an hour later got a call saying my car has had "some serious body collision repair work done and was poorly fixed." I was never told about this alleged wreck or repair and carfax reported no known insurance or repair history. Needless to say i now have NO remaining warranty left and I am reasonably upset. I am going to take this car back to the dealer and request a full refund plus then some. However before I do that, I would like to hear what the rest of the informative TN family thinks. Thanks guys...I look forward to your feedback.
Even if Carfax shows nothing and the title is Clear, The dealer is not obligated to tell you of any damage the car has had done unless you ask them. However, If you asked about damage and they told you there never was any then there is a problem.
The dealer may not of known of the damage. If they state the vehicle does have the remainder of the factory warranty, but now they say it wont be honored because of the repairs, then make the Moultrie Motors cover the tab for the work.
Please post pictures of inside the trunk area, the back of the car, under the bumper, and behind any of the trunk linings for us to see.
Too add on to what Njerald said, Call the dealers Body shop department and just tell them you wanted a copy of a body work invoice and give them the VIN# and see if they have any record of it then go get those papers.

I will post pictures tomorrow of shotty repair job. Also the folks at Toyota clearly stated that they will NOT honor the remainder of my warranty on this matter, and since they cannot be sure of the extent of original damage that there are very few areas that they would perform warranty work, even down to mechanical issues!
Thank you JSM for your input on sticking the bill for repairs to Moultrie.
I had the exact same thing happen to me when I bought an '04 camry. I ended up trading that car in and getting a new eclipse, but, I kept researching the issue feeling that the dealership that sold me the camry should have been liable for it. What I found out is, if you had requested a carfax report that is enough in court to prove you were concerned with what the condition of the vehicle was. Meaning if the dealership knew the car was wrecked they should have told you. Meaning you are not to blame for being negligible in your concern for if the car was wrecked or not. Also the dealership did know about the damage due to the fact that every car a dealership gets in is looked over by there mechanic before it is sold. I have asked at least 10 dealerships if they look over the all the cars they get in rather it be on trade or at an auction and they've all said yes they do. SO it's BS if they say they didn't know your car had been wrecked.
Some states protect the consumer better than others. I think in Virginia, the dealership will make you sign a piece of paper that you were informed of previous damages to the car stemming from an accident. If they don't, they are held liable for any future repairs.
Check the VIN# labels on all the major body panels. (all doors, hood, trunk, and so on. If the vehicle did have work done (that required the replacement of body parts) you'll either find panels with no VIN # or the incorrect VIN #.
People are correct that it's buyer beware- but if you have a copy of the Carfax that states that there was no history of collision, don't they have a buy-back guarantee?
Buyer Beware is true, but if someone is lying, they should be held accountable for their actions. (but you'll need evidence that they lied- and spoken words probably won't be enough)
Yeah the only VIN i could find on the rear is located on the right side of the trunk lid when it is opened, fortunately it matched...unfortunately though, that means that it was also in the wreck in question. Within the buying papers it does say remaining warranty, so if Toyota has decided to void that then it should fall back on the dealer. "Due Diligence" I believe it is called. Either way, I will be getting a lawyer to settle this issue.
As for the carfax, they do have a buyback program, but I'm thinkng that's only if you pull the report prior to buying the car. I've had the car since Dec. 27, and only pulled the report this past Sunday when I felt I had something to be worried about. I'm just wondering though how a police report or insurance report was never filed if the wreck was as bad as the Toyota guy estimates? Sounds like something shady is going on and I do plan on finding out what it is!
*Pics will be posted tomorrow due to crappy weather in Nashville today...
