5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 2005 Camry with 57,000 miles. I can drive up to around 60, 65, 70 with no sounds and a smooth ride on most highway pavements, but once i go over 70, from 75 to 80 and above, but not more than 90, i start and begin to hear this rattling sound and noice stemming from the steering wheel colum. Sounds like loose mettle, rattlings, clanging somewhere in the shaft/column area but more upper than lower, if i hold the steering wheel tight the sounds dissipates, but if i let the wheel go the wheel will rattle and tremble, and i start to hear this sound. if the pavement is smooth at that high speed it is not so pronounced. I am not sure the cause of this noise. i am thinking maybe something under the hood, down below may be worn or loose in the steering wheel assembly or maybe the air bag is bugging out, but i dont think so. i have no experience with steering wheel assembly and the column itself. i may have to let the toyota mechanic take it on the high way and push it to 80 mph so they can experience and see the symptoms and they can diagnose the cure.

Its just as ^ have stated. I had that issue and went to Toyota to get it serviced and got it fixed. lucky it was under warrenty if not, it would cost about +500 (labor + parts) to have it changed. Now nothing is wrong
I was wondering if it was the tire balancing and wheel alignment needed? maybe if I changed the tires, got new tires, and did a wheel alignment the sound may go away, as it happens on high speeds. i will get his checked out and thanks for the feedback.

My 2002 Chevy Silverado has been plauged with "intermediate steering shaft" issues since the day I bought it and if you read any of the "gm-trucks" boards there are all kinds of people with this issue on their trucks. Driving my wife's 2004 camry the other day and noticed that noise and it sounded exactly like my truck's noise, and I thought to myself, surly Toyota does not have the same problems. Well, it looks like they do. Nice.

The difference is that EVERY Late model GM vehicle has this issue, I believe the shaft issue was only limited to the Camrys.

What exactly is the issue with the Camrys? and the steering wheel shaft problems? i hear like metal rubbing sounds, like loose metal clanging together, or how can i say it, like lose metal hitting each other in the shaft. crazy sounds.
