5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi I'm new to this site, I usually do all of my own work on my own cars.
I was a mechanic for about 20 years.
Has anyone out there had to change their trans fluid yet?
I've put about 50K on my 06 Camry and was getting ready to service the tranny.
Does anyone have any advice as to where to buy some t-4 ATF and does anyone happen to knw how many qt/ltrs it will take?
Is there a tranny filter to change on these?
As you can see I haven't gotten a service manual yet...
Does anyone have a specific manual that they find BEST?
Next question,
Has anyone changed out their timing belt yet?
I had a VW New Beetle and learned that you have to change the waterpump along with the timing belt, are there any tricks like that for the 06 Camry?
Is your car a 4-cyl, or a 6-cyl? If 6-cyl, is it a 3.0L or 3.3L. Is the car USA built, Or Japan Built?

as for tranny fluid, just drain and fill with new, DO NOT FLUSH.
and yes, as the guys said, a 4cyl gen 5 is a timing chain which needs no replacement.
previous to my current newer cars, i had 3 older cars (honda/mazda) that hit up to or over 200K, neither of them ever needed a water pump. what i'm saying is, change
the pump when you have to.
The only reason people change water pumps when doing a belt is for preventative measures, not because you HAVE TO. the water pump's servicing (replacement) labour involves removing the timing belt, so people do it at the same time so not to pay labour to strip the thing down again, in case it MIGHT break or leak before the next timing belt interval.
In easier terms, you have a chain, leave the pump as is until it breaks. i know a guy guy with a gen 5 4banger, 260k, nothing went yet, and he never replaced coolant or tranny fluid.
I DO plan to get a service manual, it's just been shuch a bullet proof car that I havent needed to yet.
I just want to stay on top of the service stuff. I use only Castrol Syntec 5-30 and still change it about every 3500 miles (I know what they say) I just want it to make it give me all it can.
I also have an 85 Toyota P/U with 270,000 miles on it and it's still my every day driver to work and back.
That's why I bought a Camry!
