Noob alert: Price check / extended warranty

Greetings all-

I've been reading/searching the forums for awhile, as I evaluated the purchased of a 2008 Camry. I'm getting pretty close to pulling the trigger, but I'm curious if I'm getting a good deal or not. So... n00b alert.

This will be a second vehicle for me, as a commuter vehicle (I commute about 90 miles a day... my truck gets about 13MPG burning diesel - you do the math!) I have based my calculations around 25MPG out of the Camry - most of the miles will be highway. Is 25MPG reasonable for one of these vehicles? Obviously my right foot will play some part in it, and I'm going to try to be good

The vehicle in question is a 2008 LE V6, black exterior, gray interior. It's a fairly simple unit... base audio, no moonroof, etc. The only installed options are alloy wheels, electrochromic rearview w/ compass, and a pinstripe. The salesperson showed me his invoice, which indicated a cost of about $22,300. He's indicated that he wants 2% profit, making the vehicle cost about $22,750, plus TT&L. What say you? Is this a reasonable price? MSRP on this unit is about $25,150.

I also want to purchase a 100K mile extended warranty from Toyota (no aftermarkets). His initial price was $1928, which he knocked down to $1540. I know he has a bit more wiggle room, but won't give it up. What is a reasonable price?

Any other comments or criticisms would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Terry

Yes, I have searched quite a bit. However, some of the information is no longer available or is outdated.

In reference to your ripoff comments, I presume you're referring to the extended warranty? Or to the vehicle price?

I was talking about the warranty.

So send a couple emails or make some phone calls to the dealers discussed.

Sounds like you don't want to do any work. If so, pay what is offered!

Vehicle - about the same as the extended warranty. The '08's are last years model.

Here is a comparable that has alloys, JBL, mats for $22,476. The JBL is worth a lot more than the Mirror.

To be precise: According to Toyota.com JBL comes packaged with Alloy wheels at $1500 as option. Alloy's can also be ordered on its own at $800..makes the JBL upgrade exact $700 worse. Their is some room for negotiation, but buying cars online also will add cost in my experience: a) transport cost and/or cost to travel to inspect the car and pick it up. Also, if you need to finance, your local dealer often can get you a better rate ...at least ask him in that regard. Fitzmall's advertised loan rates do not appear top notch.

Tobeit- thanks for some info without a bunch of useless criticism. I agree with the buying online part... plus, I tend to form relationships with dealers and want to go back to the same place to have work done (not routine maintenance, of course).

I need to get a new vehicle before I run the current extended warranty on my truck out, so I can't wait for an '09. And there just aren't that many LE V6s in black left in the region to choose from. I would like JBL/XM, but it's an expensive option. As far as the wheels, that's showing to be a $410MSRP option - wasn't aware of any package with JBL.

Oh, also, loan rate will be 3.9% for 48 months through TFS. Fitzmall's rates seem ridiculous, IMO.

I agree on the extended warranty being high. After a few phone calls, I've learned the actual dealer cost... I'll hit them with that Monday (I'm ready to sign the papers, but...)

What do ya'll think of the actual vehicle price? I'm going to take another run at them and see if I can knock it down any further.

Good loan rate, way to go! Agree with the point to buy at a dealer and build a relationship - if possible. I had most of my mod's actually done at the dealer where I bought the car! Recommend you try to knock off a few 100 if possible (guess the dealer will bark very soon though) and shop somewhere else for the warranty or show them a competitive quote and ask them to match it. Other than that - good luck. As long as you are happy with the value (car vs cost) - it's all what matters.

I appreciate everyone's comments (well, except njerald, who seems to be the resident forum troll).

I actually did even better on the loan rate - 1.9%. They sold me the warranty for $1010, but got on the horn to TMCC and cut the rate down 2pct as a "package deal". I couldn't argue with that.

I picked the car up yesterday, and have already put 200 miles on it. It's a tad different than driving a 23-foot-long 4WD diesel truck that weighs about 6 tons, but I think I'm going to like it.

Now, for the mods - communications equipment and emergency lighting/siren. That should be interesting.

'twas raining when I picked up the car, so it's nasty. I need to wash it tomorrow... maybe pix then.

As far as what I do - I'm a volunteer firefighter and an amateur radio operator (amongst a few other responsibilities... I'll leave it at that). I'll be equipping the vehicle with some basic communications equipment and lighting in support of those tasks. In comparison, the truck has the entire center console replaced with radios, Motorola mobile workstation (mobile computer), a commercial topper with 20 antennas on the roof, etc. I will normally take the truck for scene response, but, if I'm out in the car, I want at least some equipment.

The dealer should just love me firing up the hole saw and drilling holes in the trunk lid !

Can't complain about that one bit. Good job.

njerald is a valuable contributor, but he has this absurd need to scream at people and insist that they use the search feature.

njerald -- geez, could you just relax on that, finally? All you do is piss people off. They come here to ask questions. If you don't want to answer them, that's fine -- the rest of us will handle it. Just go find some other questions that you do want to answer, instead. It's really just that simple....

When I was growing up, I was taught that you could be the most knowledgeable person in the world, but that didn't matter if you were an ass. People would regard you as an asshole and ignore what you had to say, whether or not it was correct. That's a lesson njerald really needs to learn.

Either that, or his hurts. I dunno.
