Hi everybody!
Finally I made up my mind to buy a V6. I'm so happy about it but........to make story short, today I test drove LE V6 auto and discovered that during normal drive tachometer was jumping up some times. It happened 3-4 times during 10 minutes test drive. Car was not shaking at all, but it was sort of like transmission was slipping to higher gear for a sec and then went back. I decided to make a longer test without salesman, and drove it for about 30-40 minutes in different conditions and it was the same thing, no matter you are on highway or in city the car's rpm was jumping up while my foot was absolutely stable on the gas pedal. Salesman said this is normal, these transmissions are how he said "intelligent" and it is absolutely normal. Instead of drive testing another V6 I decided to go to trusted source, you guys, to ask if it is normal and all V6 auto does that or I test drove a broken camry?
Thanks a lot in advance for your help guys,
Have a great day!
Im not sure i never drove on my self but when you mentioned the "intelligent" part im thinking it has to be the drive by wire and the transmission trying to learn your driving habits? could be possible since its a new car and not driven alot.

It is not normal. Where did you test drive? If it is one my guys who told you that I'm going to kick him the head.
ROFL. It's just funny how hard the salesman insists on saying this is "normal conditions." Of course, if they say the truth, that this "normal condition" is actually a faulty spec, then they'd be shooting their own foot. I have an I-4 and don't experience this slip-up. But then again, I don't have 268 hp underneath my hood
If I were you, I'd wait until they fix this problem. Just try to resist temptation

Wowww, so it is NOT NORMAL to have that thing? I'm shocked now!!! Is it something to do with reprogram it with computer or it is malfunction that will require new parts? (new transmission???) I'm so happy now that I walked away!!!! Wowwww....any suggestions? what if next car I'll test drive will be the same?
Doesn't sound normal to me. If a well designed and operating transmission is key to your happiness on this car, move on to another car.
Not normal - test drive another one...at another dealer If the V6 is all okay (recommend you take a look at some of the V6/6spd. tranny threads here)... it drives very smooth and has plenty of power when needed.
Trust me, I've been watching my new SE V6's tach like a hawk, ever since the first minute of the first test drive. I have never seen anything but a slight rise consistent with the building revs, then a drop down as the car shifts upward, and so on. In other words, nothing strange or different or unexpected at all.
I would certainly recommend one thing: "Try a different car."
Thanks guys for all your inputs! Highly appreciated!!!
Just can't believe how close I was buying this car.
So no matter what, if your foot is pressing gas pedal steadily the rpm can not change and shift up and down. Which i have never seen in any other car till today. Unless of course you want to accelerate than it is different. But driving on straight road about 35-40 mph and rpm goes up 2 notch for a sec and back it is a problem with tranny i guess. That what I thought but salesman said it is absolutely normal...
Akira I was test driving the car in Alexandria VA.
So I guess it is time to test drive another one, but what if it is not doing during test drive is there any chance it'll do later on? Any experiences?
Thanks again for your help!!!
Some owners had it pop up after thousands of miles, some have had it fixed with a reflash, some with a new tranny/torque converter and some are on their 2nd trannys with mixed results.
Thank you all guys for your help. I found so many posts regarding this problem!!! I really don't know what to do, I love this camry but would not buy it until this problem is gone....really dissapointed, because the car is so beautiful, it is a lexus without those rings and bells...well...i guess i will have to wait until toyota has a solution to it...
Thanks everybody !!!!!!!!!

Well, from my perspective....
I certainly would not buy a car that wasn't performing perfectly during the test drive. Any excuse that "it's just learning how you drive" is nonsense.
I certainly would not buy a car that I didn't have a chance to test drive, for all sorts of reasons, for that matter.
So, just test drive whatever car you find that you like, and keep an eye on the tachometer. If it's working well, then you have to decide whether the reports of the "flare" represent any likelihood that any car you might buy might have the same problem.
I just made that decision myself, and I really didn't worry about the "flare" at all. Oh, you bet, I kept an eye on the tach, and I still do. But, you know, it's not like every single V6 owner in here is saying they have the "flare." Truly, only a few do. It's certainly not an "insignificant" amount compared to the V6-owning membership here, but my impression is that the vast majority of what has to be well into the "hundreds of thousands" of V6 owners in the real world simply aren't having this problem.
So, you can "try your luck." I still expect that, on average, just like it has been for 30 years or more, you'll wind up having fewer problems with a Toyota -- even a Camry V6 -- than you would with virtually any other car you could possibly buy. And that's why I bought one, myself.
I have the 08 V6 and would advise test driving a few of them, and then choose the best one based on the test drive. My V6 is the smoothest driving car that I have driven in its price range. HOWEVER, the six speed transmission took a little getting used to because it is more active than a traditional five speed transmission. I have somewhat learned its sensitivities and I have adjusted MY driving. I can now drive the car subconsciously, like it likes to be driven. Some people expect the six speed to perform traditionally and are not willing to learn the car. Nevertheless, you are doing well to watch out for the problems of the past.
