5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Subs only on the front doors? Is that right? I also heard that the JBL amps are tuned for the speakers....so, replacing the front door speakers with some high quality 2 way or even 3 way to get the tweeters close to the sub is not a viable option?
PS: I read in the manual that the Camry has only 6 speakers...not sure where you read the 8 speaker count?

toyota likes to say "8 speakers in 6 locations". the manual will treat a single rear 2-way speaker (technically 2 speakers) as one speaker.
Camry Brochure, toyota.com, Service Manual are some places you can look for the info.
I am out of the country and can't look it up in paperwork if it even exists other than (8 speakers in 6 locations)...toyota.com does not describe how the JBL is set up either.
Thanks, that is very helpful. Do you also have a link to the spec (frequency range etc) of the individual speakers to see if it makes sense to upgrade or not? Do you also know if the amp has frequency filters for each channel?
The new Camry is the first Toyota to take advantage of JBL’s new Distributed Subwoofer System (DSS), which optimizes base response throughout the cabin in unique fashion, utilizing 4 unique, high performance 6 x 9 inch woofers in the front and rear of the cabin to accomplish this feat.

Front Mid-Range (2) 65mm mid-range metal cone speakers (left and right) are used, mounted on the left- and right-hand instrument panel shelf. A metallic compound was selected for the construction of the mid-ranges, since it is both extremely lightweight and uniform, minimizing high-frequency distortion, with sufficient size to allow operating up into mid-frequency response range when needed.

The woofer portion of these unique, high performance speakers is responsible for rear passenger cabin bass response, enabling JBL’s new Distributed Subwoofer System (DSS).

Quote:
Amplifier (1) The 8-channel digital signal processing (DSP) amplifier, rated nominally at 55 watts/channel and 440 watts of overall power output, is mounted underneath the front passenger seat. •This amplifier first converts the incoming audio signal (CD, broadcast) into multiple channels, then delivers specific information to each of the JBL system’s loudspeakers, ensuring optimum audio imaging to each of the vehicle’s seating locations. •Each of the amplifier’s eight digital output channels delivers a varying amount of power to each of Camry’s 8 specialized loudspeakers, optimizing balance and enhancing tonal blending, regardless of the music or broadcast source.
There are no subs in the car. The speakers in the doors are mids, not subs. There is a difference.
The rear speakers are coaxials so there are two drivers even though it looks like only one.
...yeah, njeralds link explains that quite nice (midrange speakers, "distributed subs"). What I try to find out if it makes sense to replace the front door speakers with better range mid's (I found some good 2Ohm's) and even ad a 2 way to it. But I can't find more info than what Njerald listed above. I want to know as I need to open my front doors very soon to do the tint work anyway. Replacing the speakers and adding some mat's would be easy at the same time. Any help is appreciated.
Yes, that is a nice general description but tells you nothing about their real spec ...how is the frequency output of the amp managed, cross overs, gain adjust etc, what is the range of the individual speakers, noise factor etc. I like my sound but if I can do a simple swap with to a high end 6x9 to make it even better I would do that.
