5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I am a new member here. I am planning to purchase an 08 Camry LE v6 this Spring and am concerned about the 6 speed transmission and its rumored problems. Have they been sorted out? Any and all input would be appreciated. Thanks.
Trust me, you will get more info by searching this topic. In short, yes the problems are cleared up. Just don't expect the six speed to drive like more traditional transmissions. Its slightly picky about how it likes to be driven.
Regarding a long test drive, if a new car you're considering has little mileage on it, say, under 20 miles, would they let you go out on your own and do a 5+ mile test drive? I can't imagine that they would. How long would a reasonable test drive be then?
Someone says it will happen in the cold winter start. But how about for those live in S. California or Florida. They never have winter, and does that mean they will never have flare problem?
Someone says it will happen after certain milage, such as 8000 miles or so. So that mean when you test drive a new car, very likely that you will not find any problem. Is that true?

Well, a dealer probably wouldn't let you "go out on your own" -- you'd have a salesperson along with you. And, a 5+ mile drive is probably well within the range of the routine "test drive loops" most dealers use. "Just go for a test drive" and pay attention to the tachometer. Make sure you turn off the radio, and see if you can get the salesperson to SHUT UP while you're driving....
Knock on wood somewhere - my '08 has just over 6K miles and the transmisssion has worked very well thus far.

Getting the dealer to allow me to take the car out on my own hasn't been a problem. So far Nissan and Honda have obliged. I'm just wondering if they let you put mileage on what's supposed to be a salable new car, since if the car exceeds some relatively low amount of miles, it's not salable as new anymore.

wrong, new means you are the first title holder. Look on the new parking lot, many have 200/300+ miles on. Some of them due to dealer transfer etc. Also, if you get to have the test ride for your own...who stops you from going 5 miles. Often dealer offer to have the car for an hour or even two.
Thats right to the above advice. The test drive is between the salesperson and yourself for the most part. If you are sincere then there is little limit to a test dive. They have a good knack for sensing those sincere about purchasing. Let them know that you know about the transmission flares from 07 and that you want to DRIVE the car. Allow the salesperson to STFU and drive the car with the time and patience to hear and feel the transmission.
Its the quietest, most powerful car at its price point, hands down. It just shifts more than you will be accustomed to. It does take a bit of getting used to, but the flare is supposed to be gone. Yes, I own one.

Great advice. Be up front with any concerns. We can tell buyers from joy riders
