5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
His alternator went, so he got that replaced. Now when he starts it, it revs all the way up to 3000 RPM's. I thought it might be a throttle body, or the IAC valve(Idle air control valve). WOuld geting the alternator replaced have anything to do with this? Any ideas on what it could be?

Are you sure that it's actually going up to 3,000 RPM's? It's normal for the vehicle to flare when started. I'm guessing that your friend didn't notice the flare before and is now, because he had work on the car.
I've seen MANY people complain about normal things and exaggerate concerns after getting their car worked on. Suddenly, they seem to notice every little thing.
Are you sure that isn't happening with your friend?

Ive used his car many times in cold weater, on cold starts. And its never reved that high. I witnessed it happen. It used to rev to 2200 at most, now its at 3000 or somtimes more at a cold start.

If no codes are present (which is strange in itself) I'd do the following things first:
Check for possible air/vacuum leaks in lines, hoses, air intake ducting, etc...
Clean the IAC and throttle body (with a specific throttle body cleaner)

theres no CEL, but ill have him take it to autozone and see if they can pull any codes out of it. And how exactly do you do the throttle body/IAC? dissconnect the air duct going to the butterfly valve, open, and clean it?

I can't remember if the '02 has a throttle cable or not (I'm having a mental block/brain fog). If it's computer controlled use a throttle body cleaner and spray the TB and throttle blade down. Then wipe it down with a rag. Clean all sides of the throttle plate and the entire inside of the throttle body until it's nice and clean.
Doing a search should net you the information you need. Don't follow marc780's thread though if you come across it.

The 2002 has DBW. The way i did it in my 05 I4 was i put the key in on. And rested somthing on the accelerator to keep the plate open, and used a toothbrush and throtelbody cleaner. hows that sound?
