Theft attempt of my 02 Camry

My 02 Camry is parked in a 'secure' parking area of my apartment building but still someone managed to open the door and get in. This person went through the glove, etc and left everything strewn all over the front passenger seat, as if he was looking for something. I feel the thief most likely could not start the car. I called the dealership thinking I should change the locks and was quoted $400 for the key kit including the ignition and a labour charge of $750. At the same time he told me on checking my vin number that this car has a chip in the key and a non chip copy key cannot start the car. So I am thinking, why spend $1200 when this car cannot be started with a non chip key. So what do you all think?? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

you never know....the theif could have merely broken in to try and steal something like CDs, navi unit, aftermarket radio, cellphone, etc or find something like info to your banking/checking etc.
i live in a very safe area, and occasionally well have some punk kids break into a car to steal stuff like i mentioned above...someone broke into my neighobors 02 taco to steal a collection of cds and his change compartment...
but i feel if you have the chip key there is no need to try get another key set. the chip key is an effective deterrant system, and i think you should be fine

totally agree dont worry to much about stealing the car, just about your possesions. not sure if you have a alarm but invest in one if you dont and also remove your radio faceplate and anything else that might catch the eyese of theives

Thank you all for your inputs. This car has a inbuilt small red flashing security light in the dash which starts flashing after the car is locked but the alarm does not go on when you pull the door handle after it has been locked. I also have the usual car remote for opening the door locks and closing. Maybe the alarm needs to be adjusted to be more sensitive. Does anyone know how this adjustment can be made.
Thanks.

our 04 camry had its passenger window smashed in a underground parking 2 weeks ago. They took nothing. The deck was right there, ther was the amp, subs, 200$ DG glasses. They took nothing but they looked through all the papers and made a mess. I think its some crackhead just trying to get some cash. 6 other cars in that basement had the same thing happened.
