how to paint, at least how i did it...

i started another thread showing pictures of my car.. wonderous body kit... installed... unfortunately i did not take any pictures during the process...

but this is what is involved...

1. buy all the necessary equipment... air compressor... i used a 100 gallon compressor, and i would have to pause because i would run out of air, paint gun, various grit of different sand paper, primer paint, urethane base, and a urethane clear, tack cloth, rubbing compound et...

2. prep the material being painted... take your time doing this... the better the prep, the better the final project... using wet sand, i used a 600 grit sand paper, to make sure my surface was nice and very smooth to the touch...

3. wash everything with dish soap, to or three times... the surface needs to be uber clean etc...

here is where it gets tricky...

4. paint with primer, doing 50% overlay spray (generally this is what i found to be the consensus on line in terms of painting... wait 10-15 coats of pain inbetween each coat... just enough paint to get even coverage over the whole thing...

5. urethane paint/clear coat, what they use on newer cars is called a multi stage paint job...
for the base paint, you wan even coverage, don't worry about putting extra coats an soforth.. (tip, with just base coat on, the paint is going to look very dull, it is the clear coat that gives it the nice gloss so don't freak out...) again generally 10-15 minutes between layers,
YOU CAN ONLY WAIT 30 MINUTES TO AN HOUR AFTER THE BASE COAT TO CLEAR COAT... (in general follow the tech sheats on the paint and clear coat... they will tell you everything including at what pressure to spray...)

6. allow clear coat to harden 24 hours, no more than 72, to do a final sanding and polishing... (we'll see about this cuz i have to wait for the following saturday... but generally people on line say this)

7. if you need a clean room, you can do what i did, i found an old family size beat up tent, you can probably find one on line... used for really cheap... great clean room....

if you guys have any questions, let me know, and ill do my best to answer them... again, i can only tell you what i did, and what my experience was, and the variation and difference...

as far as i know, unless you are painting a show car, and you do not planning on being a professional, there is no need for the super high end paint guns... get a descent lphv (low pressure high volume) gun and you should be alright..i got mine on sale for 17 dollars, clearance item brand new in package normally 50 dollars... air pressure regulator to fit on the bottom of the gun 10 dollars, quick release nozzle 1 dollar, hose 20,
all in all the equipment cost me about 100, the paint about 150... but once you own the hardware you can now paint for just the cost of pain...

again i wish i had taken photos of the process, but alas... never even thought of it until now...

if you have any questions please feel free to ask...

here is a link to the thread i started that shows pictures of the paint job...
gen 5 wonderous body kit

good luck...

Thats a good write up, got any pictures?
I want to include an important tip on painting - The air pressure it says to use, on the paint can, is measured at the spray gun. BUT your air pressure drops in between the compressor and spray gun. The amount of pressure drop depends on how long your hose is.
As a result you must increase pressure AT THE COMPRESSOR to compensate for this or your paint might come out badly!

Compressors are not rated by gallons (but by air flow) and you should have a oil/water/air filter in the line.

compressors are rated by volume flow rate AND pressure. be careful because some low end compressors try to trick you by advertising a good flow rate at 0 gauge pressure, but a crappy rate at rated pressure.

but im sure by 100 gallon he was talking about the receiver size....

good write up, good initiative

unfortunatley i don't have any picts...

excellent point about psi...you can buy a adjustable psi gauge/regulator i bought mine for 10 bucks at harbor freight, and screwed right into the bottom of my airgun, then i put a quick release on the other end of the regulator... (i use my compressor mostly for pneumatic tools...)
