Went to the Dealer Today; Another TRD Rim Damaged...

Okay, well, I had scraped a curb with my 08 SE V6 and damaged the rear right chromed TRD rim a week or so back, and have been trying to find a way to fix it -- called every shop in my area and none of them want to deal with fixing chrome...they all tell me the rim is going to have to be completely redone -- and that's without them even seeing it.

What's worse, though, is that yesterday, I noticed, as I approached the car, ANOTHER gash in the front driver's side TRD rim -- this one isn't a scratch, it's an actual CENTIMETER or so missing from the lip of the rim, as if a chunk is just gone...now, I have begun thinking of what could have done this -- because I definitely positively did not do this second damage to the front rim -- and have come up with four possibilities: a valet parker did it (I had to attend a ritzy event here in Vegas last week, and had no choice but to valet it), the hand car wash when they put the car on those automatic tracks so it moves through, road debris that kicked up when I was on the highway, or possibly attempted theft of the rim...

I went to the dealer I purchased the car from today and explained at the service department that I had these rims sent out by the dealer to be chromed, and that we also purchased the special warranty through Toyota for the rims and tires...after showing the woman who was working the service pull up slot the damages on both rims, she said I would have to bring it back next week so someone else can look at them and see what needs to be done...it did not sound hopeful.

So, both TRDs are damaged now, and the vehicle has 800 miles on her...I don't think the appointment I have next week will fix anything because no one seems to want to deal with the damaged chrome, but shouldn't it make sense that the dealer could help me with this being that they ordered them for me? Sure, I damaged one of them, and I'm willing to pay for that one -- but is it going to come down to them needing to order another set of chromed TRDs does anyone think?

And what could cause the "chunk" of rim missing from the lip? Is this common with road debris? Could it have been the car wash track? I KNOW I did NOT damage this one -- just the other side, for sure.

Only 800 miles and she's hurtin, fellas.....

Nahhhhh.....I don't right this second; the damage on one of them is like curb rash -- because I skimmed a sidewalk...so the lip is scratched a bit...the other damage is like a chunk of wheel missing from the lip -- as if it was cut out....

Thank you for getting back to me though....

is a piece of the wheel missing or did the chrome flake off, if the chrome is missing, it was probably a bad dip process

Hey Drew--

Thanks for getting back to me.....where in Long Island are you from? I am originally from Atlantic Beach, near Long Beach, and then I lived in Rockville Centre!

No, there is an ACTUAL piece of wheel missing, making me think this was something the valet drivers did, or when the car went onto the car wash track (even though it's a hand wash place...)...do you think there is anything that can be done for this?

Well, regardless of whether it was the valet or not, do you think anything can be done to fix it?

How did I get out where -- Atlantic Beach or Vegas? My folks moved to Long Island from Brooklyn when I was very young, and then when they retired from owning a business in Brooklyn for many years, they moved out to Vegas, so I went out there later on for a change of life and weather. Will probably move back to NY though.

Sorry yea I meant Vegas, thats a big stretch from Long Island lol. Im sure a rim specialist could hopefully fix it. Good luck with getting Toyota to fix it, keep bitching and see what happens. Hope it turns out ok for ya.

Hey Forcer,

Thanks for replying....sheeesh....I feel like I'm the only one who this happens to!! Did you ever get damages in your rims?

I'm going to try to get the dealer to pay because we took an extended special warranty through Toyota for these TRDs and the tires...if they believe they are not responsible for paying, I'll shell out the cash...

But how hard a fix do you think this is? You think they're gonna end up getting me new TRDs and chroming those?

Yeah, it has been a BIG change from the Island to Vegas...but I think we're gonna eventually move back to NY...

Do you think a rim person could fix this "missing piece" of the rim? If not, they'll probably have to be rechromed, yes?

So, . . you want the Toyota dealer to pay for a damaged rim done by a valet at some place in Las Vegas, . . . or maybe it was a car wash?

To expect the dealer to pay is a long reach. Am I missing something?

No, that's not what I'm saying.

I purchased a special warranty on the TRD rims and 18" Michellin tires through the dealer upon purchase, and they told me this would cover damages incurred by the rim -- this could be road debris, potholes, anything...the rim that I myself scratched I will probably have to pay for, but the other "missing piece of rim" that I just discovered may fall under that warranty -- I have to see when I go back there next week...

My worries are that if these damages can be fixed...is this something that can be "sanded down" or "filled in" or are they going to have to send them for rechroming or replacements?

lets see... my front and rear driverside door was swiped (two separated occasions, while I was in school... stupid inconsiderate student drivers (got it fixed... I was lucky I waited...) rear bumper passenger side was swiped by an inconsiderate church member... (got it fixed with the doors)... One of my stock rims is curbed after turning too sharply (my fault)... My front bumper was cracked when a truck came into my lane, forcing me over an mound of ice (pic below)... fixed it myself with a help of my friend... only to have my lip and bumper scraped by my rookie cousin turning into a wall... I'm working on my new bumper so not minding it much... My rear bumper is also scraped up for backing into my friend's car... my fault obviously, but she was cool with it since there's no damage to her car... I'll have to sand it down and paint over during the summer... My center console is torn up now since I was in the middle of my LED swap before coming up to CT... so that's the condition of my car right now... and you don't hear me complaining... everything is coming out of my pocket too... so you need to chill a bit... I still love my car since it does what a car is supposed to do... If you're going to create a thread for every single little thing that happens to your car... I'd feel sad for you, not for what happened but your obsessing...

Like I said It happens... and in the end, its just a car

Hopefully this will make you feel better
