Yes, I've searched (here and google)... I thought I recall seeing a thread about someone converting their 2GR's cartridge filter setup to a spin-on -- but I can't find it anywhere.
I've just finished the second at-home oil change on my wife's car (actually an Avalon, but I thought I'd try here given the traffic...), and I'm now totally hating the cartridge setup. Who on earth dreamed up this mess. Two separate openings to possibly leak. Two separate O-rings that must be carefully installed, or they will leak, and a silly pre-change drain valve, that's just another source of possible leaks.
This time, the little lid on the end of the housing decided it didn't want to come off at all, so I just unscrewed the whole thing, and let the oil spill. Anyway, I so desperately want to convert this car back to a good old fashioned spin on filter that can be changed about 10x faster than the cartridge. Has anyone seen a kit for this purpose?
Sidenote: I'm amazed at how GREAT the filter setup is on the 2GR's big brother, the 4.0L 1GR-FE found in the 4Runner, the FJ, Taco, and V-6 Tundras. They put the spin on right up top of the engine compartment on a little drain platter. With the 1GR, you could change your filter while dressed for a formal occasion, and not spill a drop. So I guess they had to balance things out and put a 2GR's filter into a cartridge and stick it on the bottom of the engine. Thanks Toyota...
