Don't close my thread until it's been solved, Please. I've sat at idle for a LONG time and it hasn't 'relearned' idle, don't tell me that I'm retarded and need to search. HELP ME. Is that not the point of these forums? I HATE POSTERS THAT BELITTLE. If that's how you like to reply, then don't even bother replying to this.
My original post:
2002 Camry XLE V6, 97,000 miles. I put in a new battery today, when I drove to the store, it ran, started fine, etc, but the battery was about done for. So I bought a new one and put it in. Instantly, it had a hard start, took 2 or 3 cranks to get it running, but it wouldn't idle. I've driven it all day, 3 times on the interstate and it still won't idle. I went back and had the battery and alternator checked, both are good. So... why won't it idle? Why the rough starts? I have NO idea what would cause this.
To follow up, I have put it in gear and idled, plenty. In the driveway, at stoplights, etc etc etc. IT WILL NOT IDLE. Any help, of the helpful nature, would be appreciated.
Did you knock any vacuum lines off of the airbox while changing the battery?

I've checked around for vacuum lines and haven't seen any that aren't connected anymore. Are there vacuum lines around the battery? I haven't seen any at all. The terminals are clean and tight as well. And no, I don't have a check engine light on, not yet at least and it's died many many times.
It won't even idle for 2 seconds, when I let off the gas it goes right done and dies, sometimes it lasts for a few seconds, but generally it just dies. I can 'idle' with it in gear as long as my foot is holding the gas at the right place to get the RPM's there, but when I let my foot off the gas it instantly dies.
Do you hear any hissing noises under the hood? It really sounds like a vacuum issue.

well i had the same problem with my 84 eldorado and it turned out to the iac motor. It might be possible for it to be damaged by reconnecting a battery but i don't know.

I'd love to turn it on and open the hood to listen, but then it won't idle I'll try to listen closely. Actually, this morning I looked around right when I started it as the choke worked enough to bring it to normal idle, (about 700, instead of 1200) and I didn't hear any hissing. I would think a vacuum too, but I can't find one undone.
I've read about the dirty throttle body problem, I might just have to try that.
If it doesnt idle its most likely either dirty or broken IAC, gummed up throttle butterfly or bad coolant temp switch. The first two are the most likely.

I'm going to clean the throttle, that's my best guess by now too. Thanks everyone!!!

Actually, there isn't an IAC so it's probably not broken OR dirty.
I'm guessing that you're really marc780.

Without an MIL that's a great starting point. Make sure to use a designated throttle body cleaner and not a carb cleaner or other nonspecific product. I'm pretty sure that your problem will go away after you clean your throttle body. This problem is fairly common.
Same just happened to my friends 02 camry with the 1MZ after a battery and alternator replacement. Reset the ecu again by disconnecting the bettery for an hour or so then conect it back up. And start it with all accessories on. A/c, headights, rear defroster, etc. etc. to help bring the idle up. and just let it sit, give it some gass if needed. He did that and it ran great.

Seatbelt! you're piloting a vehicle were dual vvt-i hitts harder then VTEC and the torquesteer can possibly snap your wrists
when mine does that, i drive it to bring it up to temp, then let it idle and it seems to do well.tip- turn on your a/c and it will usually increase revs enough to idle while it relearns.
I had the same problem. If you want the fix go to the bottom of the post, if you want the whole story read on.
I had a really dead battery. I was over a friend's house and when I went to go home the car would not start. Got a jump and proceeded on home. It was night and I had the high beams on, the car stopped running about a mile down the road. Had it towed. Next day replaced the battery and had the alternator checked out. Started the car it would not idle, it would start and run, but stall at idle. No codes on my OBD II scanner. Brought it to the dealer, they read a MAF sensor code.
THE FIX
They removed the MAF sensor and cleaned it. Ran like a charm.
