5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 2008 Hybrid with the JBL audio (no nav). I've never liked the "imaging" - the sound seems to be coming too much from the front, as opposed to the sides. I realied yesterday that it's pretty much just bass coming from the door speakers.
Mind you, I don't really know much about car audio - just what sounds good to me. Is it possible to replace the speakers in the door with some regular mids or a two way speaker? I'm assuming I couldn't just switch out and that the output on the amplifier determines what is going to a speaker? Or am I wrong about that? I'd love not to have to change the amplifier out also, if I don't have to.
The system has more bass response than I need. I'd rather have more of everything else coming at me from the sides than just bass.
yeah, I have the bass levels where I want and the fader where I want. I hear what you're saying about the sound coming from the front, but I think that given the positioning of the speakers in a car, it just doesn't sound right to my ear as it is.
I understand but i dont think changing just the speakers will do much. IIRC the JBL system has a preadjusted frequency response to the acoustics of the car, causing the certain image. The only way that i can think of to fix your image problem is to add you own DSP like the Rockford Fosgate 3sixty.1 or JL cleansweep, but that might just lead to replacing your speakers, amp, and possibly even HU

In the JBL setup, the front door speakers are woofers only for bass. So, yes, I would expect bass to come from their. The mid sit in the dash and the mix between both should make your sound right. The back are full frequency 2 way with a woofer and a tweeter.
Right, that I got. So what I am trying to figure out is, can I replace the woofers in the door with a full range speaker? I.e., does the signal that the amplifier sends to the woofers in the door a full-range signal and the speaker itself filters out the mid and high frequencies? Or does it send only the bass frequencies to the speaker?
Doesn't the JBL system run 2 ohm drivers? I know in the Gen 5 they did.
To answer the question, yes it is possible to replace the stock speakers with a 6.5 component set, preferred, or a set of coaxials. I have a 6.5" components in the doors, both the mid and the tweeter, and it does not sound like it's coming from the sides. More than anything else, it sounds like the music is coming from the rev-counter and speedometer area. Without time alignment it sounds like it's coming from the radio itself. I have an aftermarket system though, including radio and an amp.
DSPs can be used with stock radios but it's usually to add an amp; not for use with stock systems.

Im sorry but DSPs can be used with either OEM or aftermarket, a prime example is the Rockford Fosgate 3sixty.1 or 3sixty.2 or the Audiocontrol units DSP (digital signal processor) is used to alter the original frequency response in terms of equalization, time alignment, crossover points, and level matching
