Automatic door locking not kicking in when shifting from "P"

I bought a 2002 Camry LE that came without a remote key.
I then bought a used keyless remote with same FCC ID as in the manual, guaranteed to work with this model.

I couldn't get it to enter programming mode then tried to see why: I discovered that automatic door locking also does not kick in when I shift from Park and that I cannot change to any of the four modes of this feature. So I figure the two may be connected to the same problem. Edit: auto door lock now does kick in (thanks James).

Fuses are OK, dome light turns on and off as it should when the door is opened/closed. All lock buttons work fine.

Could a previous owner have disabled this feature to install an aftermarket alarm perhaps? Or else what could be causing this problem? Ideas much appreciated.

Edit: Turns out it's a former rental car without keychain remote and it can't be just simply added either.

The way that I understand it is that the stealership has to program the key fob to work with your vehicle (i.e. that is why my will not work with your car). As far as the auto door locks, if it is like my Camry, that is programmed through the ignition and gear selector setting. This is something that you can do yourself if you have the owners manual. I know that mine can lock the doors when you reach 10mph or when you place into drive or reverse, whichever. Check online for an owners manual and I bet you can find one. If you want to tell if there is an alarm on your vehicle now that was there from a previous owner, take a look at the battery as there should be a power cable running from the positive post of the battery to power the alarm. I would also think that there would be some type of light that flashes when the alarm is armed. i know that this is kinda vague but hopefully it will put you in the right direction.

please refer to the following link to program your remote. you do NOT need the dealership to program the remote for you.

http://www.automotivehelper.com/topic73219.htm

when the instructions say 1 second, count "one mississippi" or else it will not work.

as for the auto locking, double check that you are doing it correctly.

another possibility.. are you sure it is the LE? does it have color keyed side mirrors?

Thank you. The car says LE on the trunk. You asked "does it have color keyed side mirrors?"

Can you tell me what that means, here's the picture of the mirror:

I think there is no alarm on this model, there is no red light on the board at all.

The car does not automatically lock the doors as it should when you switch from Park. Edit: auto door lock now does kick in. I tried to get it to do that with no success by doing this like the manual says:
—Automatic door locking... Mode 1 - Automatic locking linked with the shift position... All doors are automatically locked when the shift lever is moved out of the "P" position etc. etc.

CHANGING THE MODE
To change the mode, do the following:
1. Shift the shift lever into the "P" position and close all doors.
2. Push the power door lock switch on the rear side to unlock the doors.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
4. Within 5 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the "ON" position, push and hold the power door lock switch on the front side for about 5 seconds.
5. Open door warning light will flash to indicate that the mode has been changed.
The flashing of the open door warning light indicates the mode which has been selected.

What could be wrong if fuses are OK. All lock buttons work fine when I press the lock button inside the car. Dome light also turns on and off as it should when the door is opened/closed.

Yes, it looks like your mirrors are the same color as the car.

Did you do the programmimg as in the link from MrSo0hho posted?????

You have to have the fob programmed before attempting to change the mode!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you are stuck in left field with the water going over your head.

Are you saying Automatic door locking when you shift from Park to Drive can't be activated until you activate the keyless remote first?

Though they both use the same fuses and do the same thing I didn't know one depended on the other.

Are you sure about that?

No, because I don't have a 2002 but did you buy the keyfob just to look at it or do you want to use it????????????

In reading past posts, the steps are very sensitive to the time limits given in the various steps.

and my Gen6 has different steps than you have listed to change modes.

Yes I would like to use it but cannot even if I use a stop watch to time the steps.

I then tried to diagnose the problem and noticed that unrelated to the car not wanting to enter the programming mode it also cannot be made to lock the doors when shifting out of P.

So I'm saying, that seems like a problem in itself and I do have the 2002 Owner's Manual and this is right out of the manual on how to get the car to lock the doors when you shift out of P:

Could be a problem with your ECU that your dealer will have to address.

when you count to 5, make sure you count slow... 1mississipi, 2mississipi, etc... it should work,

Thanks for encouraging me to try again James. It's dark out now so it was easier to see the door warning light indicating the auto lock is now set to kick in when shifting from Park.

Still can't get it to enter programming mode however.

Does the key have to stay in for at least 1 second in step 2 below?
How long between closing and opening the door twice in step 3 below?
Should the key stay in for a few seconds in step 4?
Is there a wait of few seconds between steps 8 and 9:

1. Driver door open and unlocked. All other doors closed. Key out of the ignition.
2. Insert the key [do not turn it on] and remove 2 times within 5 sec.
3. Close and open driver door 2 times within 40 sec.
4. Insert the key and remove it again from ignition.
5. Close and open driver door 2 times within 40 sec.
6. Insert the key in ignition, AND LEAVE IT IN.
7. Close the door
8. Turn the key to ON and back to lock
9. Remove the key
10. Power lock will cycle to confirm indicating entry into programming mode.

just keep trying... i have an 02, and it worked like a charm the first time... on step 1, i waited 2 seconds in between inserting keys... and generally when it says to do something within 40 seconds, i generally waited 5-10 seconds in between each action, i.e. step 3. close door, wait 5-10 seconds, open door wait 5-10 seconds close door wait 5-10 seconds, open door again... and just to make sure when it says to put the car in the on position, you are not turing the motor on, right? as for time between step 8 and 9, generally count out 1 to 2 seconds between steps... thats what i did... and just like cycling the car to lock, you keep trying and it will work... lol....

I didn't want to disappoint you so I kept trying and trying. Finally it was time to call in the cavalry. Toyota dealer told me that the car was originally a fleet car and that's why it never did come with a keychain remote and it can't be just simply added either.

I started a thread to see if people know what else is different between rental and consumer versions:

i'm assuming you have power windows and power door locks right? this might be the perfect time for you to go after market, then you can even get remote start, be able to roll up and down your windows all with a remote...etc etc...

not to knowledgeable in this department, i'm sure someone can point you in the right direction....
