5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I just bought a 2009 Camry CE AT in Texas. I asked the dealer to install the keyless entry. But I realized the keyless entry is not Toyota original one after I picked up my car. The remote only has Lock, Unlock, Panic buttons without any Toyota logo. It doesn't have trunk release button, which is inconvenience. The FCC ID is ELVATDD.
Is there any way that I can add trunk release? Can I just buy a remote with trunk release button and program it with my car?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but maybe the CE still uses the Gen 5 key and not the one everyone else has with their LE and SE (XLE without the Smart key). People sell blank keys for the Geb 6 on Ebay all the time, so you can get one , cut it and have the dealer program it to your car. I don't know if that will give you trunk release you want but I think it might be worth a shot. If that does not work any number of aftermarket companies can do trunk release.
This is one of the things that separates the CE from the LE. There has to be a motor or solenoid to open the lock and this is missing on the CE. Perhaps the wiring harness provides a wire to power it but it might not. In any event, you got what you got. There is likely no fix for this and honestly it might be cheaper to trade it in for an LE. Why do you think the CE is cheaper than the LE anyway? The locking system and the power seat and that's about it.

Thanks for the information. I didn't realize that the dealer will install a keyless entry without trunk release. I thought all keyless entries have trunk release nowadays before I order the car. I don't need power seat. So I don't want to pay $1000 more for both keyless entry and power seat to get a LE instead of CE. The dealer charged me $200 for installing the keyless entry on my CE. I guess I just got what I paid for. I can live without trunk release if it is not easy to add-on.
I didn't realize there could be any keyless entry without trunk release before I purchased the car. My remote's FCC ID is ELVATDD. It has two buttons on the front side as the following picture:
I found there is a 3-button remote with the same FCC ID# ELVATDD on Ebay as shown in the following picture:
Can I buy this 3-button remote and program it with my car? Will it open the trunk? Do I have to install anything else on my trunk lock?
This is why you shouldn't have a dealer install any kind of aftermarket system.
Go to a reputable, independent, local car stereo/alarm shop. In other words, don't go to Best Buy or some big-box store.
They'll be able to do anything you want done ---- for a price. They might be able to "add to your system cheaply," or not.
To editorialize a bit, I think this is a good example of the "false economy" of going for a CE. In order to get the kind of keyless entry that most cars these days have, you're gonna eat up a big chunk of that $1,000 you saved, and you're already headed towards a far messier situation than you'd get with the LE's system. And, I think the power seat is absolutely the very best investment you can make in a car -- not only for your comfort over the life of the car, but also for resale value once you move on to your next car.
You're making your own bed, and you can get a system installed that'll do what you want done, so I'm not trying to be hostile here or anything -- just "It's a good real-world example" for anyone else who might consider whether getting into a CE is all that good of an idea or not....
Beechwood,
I don't think you have a clear picture of what is going on here under the skin of your new car. The doors have power locks, meaning there are electric solenoids that open and close the locking mechanism. The keyless fob sends a radio signal to a controller somewhere under the dash or hood which in turn closes an electrical circuit to tell the solenoid to unlock the door. That is pretty straight forward. Your problem is that the CE model is a cheapened model and they cut corners. One is electric seats which cost about a grand or more and second is the remote release on the trunk. What you have is a purely mechanical system in which you can pull a wire next to the seat to release the trunk, or you can use a key to open the trunk. There is no electrical solenoid or motor attached to the rear lock. This means that the control unit that works with the doors has nothing to connect it to the trunk. No electrical wiring going to a motor or solenoid. It might be possible that the system is capable of actuating a trunk release if the electrics were there, but it would cost you 400 for the part, possibly more for additional wiring, and the labor charges to get this done. Now you re close to the price of the LE and you still don't have a power seat.
And please, trunk release, not truck release.

The CE has no motor in the trunk. Its the ol pull the cable to open. You can buy a $10 (with shipping) solenoid from Ebay and install it yourself. Now, you messed up with going to the dealer for keyless entry. They gave you a cheap aftermarket. That probably cost them $20. I thought exactly like you, I dont need power seats, keyless entry and the LE badge for 1 to 2 grand. When I bought mine it was a 2k difference. So I bought an $90 aftermarket alarm that would take care of the doors and I bought the solenoid for the trunk and use the alarm to open it. I have remote start, but I have not install it yet. Nothing wrong with the CE, it is still a Camry(not that that means anything, its not the old camry). Good luck.

That appears to be from a Sequoia or 4Runner. the third button is to open/close the window on the liftgate of a SUV. As others have stated, you can go to a (insert your favorite car audio store here) and have the motor/solenoid installed. Personally, I would have the dealer remove what they put in and get a refund for it. Then I would take that money and go choose something that is what you want. No use throwing good money after bad.
