Puzzling front brake groaning noise...

2002 Camry LE V6

Searched around and found some threads of interest but none that were exactly the same....
Occassionally I'll apply the brakes in my wife's Camry and get a groaning noise when I'm close to stopping (city driving).

I thought it could be a rock between the pad and rotor so I took the wheels off and had a look, nothing to be found. I figured that while I had the car up in the air I'd clean the rotors with some brake cleaner on both sides. After test driving the car the noise was gone......but then came back a few days later.

The rotors are Brembo blanks from Tire Rack, I'm not sure on the pads since they were put in by a shop. The pads have a good amount of meat left on them as well.

I'm taking a stab in the dark and wanting to say that maybe the pads are cheap? Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like your brake pads. I had this on my 03 Camry and the dealer replaced pads. They said the pads (if I remember correctly) either too hard or not hard enough. My suggestion would be to use oem parts. Toyota's seem to work best with oem parts IMHO.

Had that on some of my older Camrys. They said it was because of long-wear pads. Sometimes it hits a spot of really hard material which caused the noise.

i'd take them pads off and block sand them with fine emery clothe and remove a little lining. also try chamfering the pad edges with the cloth if they are not already. Then put em back on. if this doesnt work i'd toss the pads and get OEM type pads.
