I thought modern Toyota engines were broken in at the factory and the biggest reason to follow the guidelines in the owners manual for 'break in' on a new toyota was for the transmission/brakes/etc to properly brake in.
I am certain there is no right answer for all engines/situations, but I have always waited until 1000 miles or so before puttin in synth...

I don't think that the "run it hard" break in method hurts anything at all. I personally believe the greatest harm is done by running an engine hard before it's warmed up.
There isn't a special break in oil. Just use the correct weight GF-4 oil when you're supposed to, or sooner if you choose.
5000 miles?? What did that BS come from? On page 286 of my 2007 Toyota Camry owner's manual it states:
"Your vehicle does not need an elaborate break-in. But following a few simple tips for the first 1600km(1000 miles) can add to the future economy and long life of your vehicle"
So there you go, 1000 miles RECOMMENDED by Toyota. It didn't say one HAS to do it, but merely a suggestion. Just because someone broke their car in for 5000 miles please don't pass that off as some sort of fact.
