why not 0-20 or 5-20.. or just keep the existing oil in there for the full 5000 miles..

Break in period is 5K, hold off on the change until the 5K mark. I changed mine over to Mobil1 synthetic on my first oil change.

No it's not. Please show the proof of your claim.

You can change the oil as early as you want to and it won't hurt anything. It might even be helpful.

You can use Mobil 1 at any mileage that you choose.

Since this turned into a "break in" thread

TRD VVTi - what do you think of this break in method?

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I thought modern Toyota engines were broken in at the factory and the biggest reason to follow the guidelines in the owners manual for 'break in' on a new toyota was for the transmission/brakes/etc to properly brake in.

I am certain there is no right answer for all engines/situations, but I have always waited until 1000 miles or so before puttin in synth...

I don't think that the "run it hard" break in method hurts anything at all. I personally believe the greatest harm is done by running an engine hard before it's warmed up.

There isn't a special break in oil. Just use the correct weight GF-4 oil when you're supposed to, or sooner if you choose.

5000 miles?? What did that BS come from? On page 286 of my 2007 Toyota Camry owner's manual it states:

"Your vehicle does not need an elaborate break-in. But following a few simple tips for the first 1600km(1000 miles) can add to the future economy and long life of your vehicle"

So there you go, 1000 miles RECOMMENDED by Toyota. It didn't say one HAS to do it, but merely a suggestion. Just because someone broke their car in for 5000 miles please don't pass that off as some sort of fact.

Look in your manual but since I already have mine open I'll save you the trouble.

Recommended oil viscosity
4cyl:SAE 5W-20 or 0W-20

So according to Toyota no you can't. I can since I have the 2GR-FE V6. You can't (or shouldn't I'm not an engine oil expert).

+1

The lighter viscosity recommended will also give you better fuel mileage.

The question is, does it HELP like some of the claims on the web page?

Does it matter? Getting a few bottles of 5W-20 isn't that hard. Go get some and get your oil change done or pay someone to do it for you.
