5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
lately i've been noticing that within a few minutes of driving, my car will start slipping from 1st to 2nd and even from 2nd to 3rd... at first i thought this was just worn ATF, but i recently had the tranny flushed, and i've noticed only marginal improvement, if any. is this a typical problem for gen 5 V6's because my car only has 63,000 miles on it, and this is the kind of thing you see on vehicles with 150,000+ miles that need a tranny overhaul... what normally causes this on gen 5's and what's usually involved in fixing this problem? is it normal for a camry with only 60,000 miles on it to need a tranny overhaul?

do you have a link to that information? I might take that to the dealer since i believe I may be having that issue. I just thought it was normal. but when it's warmed up, I get that problem too.

theres a TSB for harsh upshift and shifting enhancement for 2002-2003 camrys equipped with the V6
try taking it to the dealer and check into said TSB.
yeah i actually had that TSB applied a while back, but interestingly enough, harsh shifting doesn't really seem to be an issue... see what happens is when the car is cold, it seems to shift normally, but after it's heated up, the transmission doesn't seem to want to grab during acceleration in first and second gear, and this makes the car feel sluggish until it gets into third gear then starts shifting more normally....

I have a I-4 2004 Camry and it has some harsh upshifts from 1>2 2>3..everytime i ask the dealership bout they say they couldnt find anything wrong with it.

When the transmission was flushed, were chemicals used? If so, flush the transmission again but with ONLY fresh fluid.
You can also try resetting the computer. Disconnect the negative battery cable for a minute or so.
Do you have an MIL? Usually if you're actually slipping there will be a variation in the input and output shaft speeds that the ECM will see.
no chemicals, just fresh fluid... i had it flushed at the dealership... i've actually did the ECU reset a couple times in the past, but not since before i had the transmission flushed... do you think that it would make a difference being that it's been flushed now? and no i don't have a MIL...

Thats a very perceptive and useful comment! But i find that replacing the trans fluid with trans fluid is the most useful repair. Also one time i changed my fluid and my transmission starting running like sh$T! And i was almost ready to post to ask your opinion. But then i found i had indeed left the transmission pan off (overzealous in my car lightening attempts)
My 2005 I4 SE has a soft 1-2 shift especially at low throttle. it is markedly different than the other shifts at same engine RPM etc. It also does not downshift like l would like (it waits too long IMHO) and I end up manually downshifting. The dealer has been through it and it is not a defect, just a characteristic of the model. The dealer said shifting was all electronic and that the TSBs were not for the gen 5.5's. I keep complaining so that if it is going out I have a record.
This is one reason we recommend not to perform a flush service if the vehicle has gone over 60,000 miles and it has never been done.....
