5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi guys and gals. I'm hours away from making a decision on purchasing my first Camry. I'd just like a little confidence booster before I sign on the line. It's an '03 SE 4 cylinder Salsa Red with 84,000 miles. It's VERY clean and was a local trade at our area Chevy dealership. I believe I have them down to $10200 and was wondering if you's thought that this was a decent price and also how nervous should I be with this kind of mileage. I realize Camry's can go a loonngg time with correct maintenance but I don't have proof of it's history. Also what kind of money would have to be put into it by 100,000 miles for maintenance to keep all that's good running the same? Thanks a lot!
i can't relate on the price, since canadian cars have a different pricing, but i agree with peach on the proof of history etc. over here we usually get carproof or carfax which is a complete history of the car provided it is registered locally and not out of province/ out of state.
yes bring a trusted mechanic to look the entire car over.
The dealership will run me a carfax but I just hate knowing that I can't see how often maintenance was done. I've been into cars my whole life and know a decent amount about what to look for when purchasing. My past has all been domestic vehicles though. Maybe that's what scares me about the mileage! The car has No dings, rock chips or anything at all wrong with the body and the interior is flawless. It puts the used Camrys at the local Toyota dealership to shame. Just nervous I guess. Thanks for the input guys!
The price isn't a ripoff, but if you look around a little more you can probably find one cheaper and with lower miles. some might argue with me, but if it was me I would also look for one made in Japan.
that aside i would 120% recommend the gen 5 camry. Buy one. you will NOT regret it.

things made in japan usually have a better build quality... games toys cars you name it...
on the other hand i have had 2 camrys both u.s. built gen 4 and gen 5, and both have been great, tranny failed on the gen 4 at 195k, and the gen 5, is at 90 and going strong... still drive both... not a problem with em otherwise... (except general wear and tear as to be expected from a 9 and 6 year old car)
as for the price... i'm gonna stick by my guns and say the price is steep, if they are offering it as a certified used vehicle, and comes with a warranty, that might not be bad, but scrooyoo is right, i would look for 1 with a lot less miles and or japanese built if not both for that amount of cash... for 10k, you have a lot of options... so make sure you are totally happy... if you are hesitant, tell the sales guy to knock a few g's off... or else you are not going to buy it, and let him make the decision for you... lol... sales guys hate me... i used to work sales...
Price is steep, considering the high mileage. My sis' got an '02 LE V6 with 54,000 mi. and all the goodies minus leather interior for a bit over $10k. Look around, browse some more. You'll find better deals. Don't get too excited over this one.

+1 - I always shy away from high mileage cars like that. Not because it might not run and be fine at the time of purchase, but being afraid of what is to come shortly down the road. It's different when you owned the car and took it to that high mileage...in that case, you know all nicks and granny's. With 10k (which is quite a chunk of money), shop around and find one with way less miles...it's out their for you.
my 03 SE has 57k and its tough as nails...
i have a list the size of my arm of maintenence ive done, but that car holds up very well and treats me good.
