5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
In the morning, I am taking my 05 Camry to the dealer, because the gas mileage has dropped from from the normal 34-38 in the city to less than 200 miles on 9 gallons of gasoline.
I keep my Camry well serviced, but tommorrow's visit will to have the fuel injectors flushed and a tuneup. My Camry has 70K miles and I have had virtually no problems, except to replace the battery and tires.
Being like the 25th vehicle I have owned and driven since being issued a drivers license some 36 years ago, I can tell when something is going on when the gas mileage drops.
It's not so much the price, since I am still paying less than $3gal for 89 octane, but those days of filling up for less than $3.00 with a 18gal tank are long gone.
First clean the MAF sensor as stated above and change to the proper 87 octane fuel. I'd then dump in a bottle of injector cleaner and a can of SeaFoam. AFTER the tank of gas with the cleaners is run through, refill the tank and check your mileage again.
You don't need a "tune up". There basically isn't such a thing anymore, and you aren't even close to being due for spark plugs (they're iridium).
Why is GEN 6 in the title of this thread when the car's a GEN 5 (actually 5.5)?
I don't remember any days where you could fill a 18 gallon tank for less than $3.00...
18 gals for $3.00... i wish there were once days like that

That sounds like unbelievable mileage to me for the 2.4 I4 in city driving. I think your 200 miles on 9 gallons (about 22 MPG) is more realistic. How did you figure that 34-38 MPG?

+1...but a lot of people here report very high MPG (V6 and I4). Mine is not one of them, just uses as much as advertised (<20 city, mid 20 highway -V6).

I was just thinking about the difference in mileage and didn't really pay attention to the OP's figures which are crazy high for city driving.
I doubt that there's anything wrong and that the mileage is normal. Maybe the OP doesn't know how to get consistant fuel mileage calculations.
200 miles on 9 gallons equates to 22.2 mpg. In the city, that's just fine. He probably doesn't know how to calculate mileage, but he isn't going to admit to it. Maybe he was comparing his steady 60 mph highway driving and in that case he might be getting 34 with a steady foot.
On another note, yes, there was certainly a time when you could fill the tank on $3. I personally paid 16.9 cents at one time, and got a free glass with the fillup as well.

i get 22 - 24 in city. i can say 30mpg in highway but not more than that. i may try to reduce the speed to 60mph and see how it works.. i usually go for 65-70.
i have a question though. does the gen 6 cam autmatically turns the OD on whenever in highway? damn im soo noob. coz i saw this magazine feature saying you can save gas by having your overdrive on while driving on freeway speeds. what do you guys think?

I agree with the first part, however you are WRONG about the second part.
