5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
What is the difference between 5th gen rental Camry LE vs. consumer Camry LE
Toyota dealership tells me the reason keychain remote can't be programmed for a 5th gen 2002 Camry LE I brought in, is because it's a former fleet car which came without a remote even though it's standard on consumer 5th generation Camry LE's.
I notice there is no flashing alarm light either, could anything as far as long term reliability be different when it comes to former rental Camrys, do they make them different when it comes to parts?
Hey C6...I did not know there is two versions and this doesnt really make sense since all the rental cars I have used had keyless entry. About that flashing alarm light... when I remove the key and open the door to get out of the car the dash lights flash till I close the door, is that what you are reffering to? I believe the settings for that can be changed. Mine is a 2002 LE I4. I would take it for a second look in a diff dealership.
i have never heard of different models for rental car places.. as long as its an LE and not a CE(base model), it comes standard with keyless entry.
do you have a key fob for the keyless entry? did the dealership even try?
edit: i just realized you are the same person from the other thread lol... again, i have never heard of a car coming different from factory for car rental places.. and again, did the dealership even try? see if you can record yourself doing the process and post it up via photobucket.com and maybe we can spot something that you may be doing wrong?
Yes, I tried it countless times before taking it in. Toyota dealership specifically told me it did not come with keyless. Yes it was a former rental but I did not tell them that. They mentioned it was a fleet car themselves. And they said fleet cars like this one do not come with keyless.
I can just call another dealership tomorrow to confirm. The alarm part was an assumption on my part, but the fleet car not coming with keyless is what the dealership said.
Thanks. So the dealership was right, there is nothing that can be done get it to work with keychain remote.
I wonder if there is anything different under the hood when it comes to fleet cars. I sure hope not.
I would not think so. Fleet cars for large leasing companies might just be a bit stripped down to save money. They certainly do not invent lower grade parts to put in - that would cost more than it saves.

???? Missing the RF receiver module for the fob.....????

I also have a fleet car, and I can vouch for the fact that Keyless Entry was not on my car. I have been looking to add it since I purchased the car. Mine is an 02 LE just for reference.
One more note. I checked Autos on MSN, and for the 2002 model year, only the XLE had Keyless standard. As for mechanical durability and build quality, I would say my J-vin (japanese manufacture) is a little better built than the Kentucky plant. If you read all the forums about problems people are having on their cars you will find a lot more Gen 6 problems than Gen 5. I have had to do a few large repairs on mine recently, but at 120,000 miles (33,000 rental) I cannot complain. It has driven like a dream before the repairs and still drives like a dream after the repairs. Plus if you have the 2.4 I4 engine, I find it easy to keep an average of 27-32 MPG mixed driving, and a max of 39 MPG with all highway at 60 mph. You have a great car, and you can take that to the bank, Enjoy
Fleet cars have better engine and transmissions parts
Fleet cars have engine and transmissions parts. Heavy duty long service life. My dad works for Ford and they put heavy duty trannie parts and ball joints shocks, struts etc. Every company make two types commerical fleet and dealer stock. At one time in the 70's you were able to order the fleet parts by codes.
they put in slightly better shocks and trannies to put up with the punishment of minimal servicing and being thrashed by rental racers just like the hertz mustang back in the day
as for the keyless seeming as you don't have it you could in stall a viper secuirity kit with keyless entry
just my two cents
Well I'll be... I looked it up and it and the entire Security System with Remote Start and Keyless Entry, the whole thing costs less than what dealers charge for a simple extra keychain.
I just might get it, any ideas on models etc.? Do these things remotely start your air conditioning/heat or is that extra?

What about installation though?
Are you looking at the TVIP system?
and on the a/c / heat thing, you just turn on what you'll want to use when you return to the car... when you start it up, it will be running
