Thumbs down Gen 6 vs. Chevy Silverado

As I have said in a few thread jacks, I was in an accident with my Camry last friday. In horrible snow/slush conditions I was driving up north through country roads. The weather was so bad that, on a speed limit 45 road I was uncomfortable going faster than 25 or 30. This is coming from someone who has great snow tires and I am usually very confident in winter driving.

While attempting to make a left hand turn into a driveway, a Chevy Silverado tried to pass me on the left. I'm not sure if he was actually going to pass me and didn't see my signal or if he really was just trying to get out of the way. But either way he was going too fast for the conditions and hit my driver's side.

The damage goes from the front quarter panel, is concentrated on the driver's door and continues back to the rear driver's door. Fortunately myself and my girlfriend were both wearing our seatbelts, though I remember hitting my head pretty damn hard when he hit me. Should an airbag have gone off?

The dealership body shop just gave me an estimate number of $6100, that's a lot of money but right now I'm waiting for the other driver's insurance company to sack up and fix my car for me. Anyone have experiences with this? How hard is it usually to get money out of them?

So for now I am riding my bike to classes and I guess just getting a little more excercise. I have one picture from my cell phone that I can share with you guys.

sorry to hear about the accident...glad ur both ok but thats why I like driving my truck...if ur were driving the truck the camry would have hit the BOTTOM side of ur door...not directly at your head/torso area.

good to know you are alright bud.
yes looking at the picture you placed, the side airbags should have deployed as well.
i bet toyota is just going to junk the two doors and the front fender, check for structural damage, and give you two new doors and a fender hopefully.

damn drivers with their 4x4 thinking that just because they have a 4x4 they got a right to speed during snowy conditions.

the pillar between the doors is bent in, Im guessing thats why the estimate is so high ($6100). And i totally agree with you about a lot of 4x4 owners. i see it around here all the time. this accident really changed my attitude about driving, Im probably going to calm down a little bit.

I hear you man...I was hurting when I was in college and got 14mpg on my truck. Now that my income has more than doubled I can handle the rising fuel costs no problem. Stay in school, get your degree and within a couple of years you can buy almost all the stuff you wanted in college.

We get a lot of the 4x4 invincible condition up here in the northwest.
A buddy of mine was just in a car accident several months ago that had a fatality.
His truck absorbed a ton of the impact, the car a 2006 Impala was destroyed.

As for how hard is it to go through car insurances it varies, and it's harder with each company.
He is still messing with Liberty Mutual on his wreck, he has gotten his money, Took about 8 weeks, but Dodge still hasn't gotten the payoff check.

Geico is a pain to deal with most of the time, Farmers is ok, Omaha can be a pain, Allstate is ok as is State Farm.

Glad you guys are o.k.
Was there any tickets written? Was it totally the other guys fault?
If so don't ride a bike, get a rental car, but have th other insurance company pay for it.
You should have had a rental car the next day if it was his fault.

Good luck with the process, it can be a pain, but sometimes it does go smooth.

As far as fault, from what I can tell its totally his fault. But the insurance companies have to determine that, thats why I dont have a rental car now. There really isnt anything I can do to get one on their tab until they man up and pay it.

No tickets written, but while we were waiting for the police the guy suggested we "get eachothers information and pay our own damages." I kindly said, no fucking way.

And I am dealing with Liberty Mutual for his Insurance, Horace Mann is my insurance through my mother and theyre probably going to cover it as collision and then recover the money from Liberty. Good thing I need full coverage I guess. The car is leased and this is greatly going to affect my decision to buy the car afterwards now.

If you are going through your insurance they should pony up for the rental car anyway and if it ends up being the guys fault which it sure sounds like they will collect from the other company.

Heck the driver of the other car in my buddies wreck died on scene but he still had a rental car that afternoon based on the police report.

I wish you luck. Trucks can be monsters, I was in a wreck with my truck, I was the creamy middle in a dodge, chevy, chevy sandwich.

My buddies truck

The car he hit

Gen6

I would have your EDR (Event Data Recorder) read out by Toyota to see why the side air bags did not deploy in the accident.

The Chevrolet may have the same thing which should show vehicle speed, whether the accelerator was depressed, whether the brake pedal was depresssed, etc.

Might come in handy if there is an insurance dispute.........
