What Year Camry to Buy?

Hi,

I'm new to the group and I'm hoping for some good advice. I own an 88 Accord with 383,000 miles on it but I want to buy a Camry next. I like to get my mileage from a car so I want to know if there is a certain year to stay away from. I want a 2005 and newer 4 cylinder automatic. Any I should watch out for (weak trans, fuel pump, ect.)?

Thanks for your feedback, BG.

as far as the 4 cylinder, 2005 and newer is a good, hardy engine. Its been pretty tried and true.

Personal opinion I would get a 2007-newer for the outstanding looks, haha. But whether you get gen 5 or gen 6 the 2.4 is a good engine with good components

Welcome to TN.

I have an '06 which is the same as the '05.

It's been a great car. My waterpump just started to leak a little bit. It's cheap and easy to replace, but it's covered under warranty.

You can't go wrong with the Gen 5.5 (2005-2006) Camry.

Did you miss the snow last night? Brainerd/Baxter got a foot of more and plenty of snow drifts last night. What a great spring.

You'r smart...383k? that's pretty good...I saw someone here looking for a best deal on a 09 camry. Buying new is always losing money no matter what. Cars depreciate the most on the third year, so 05 sounds like right model to buy now. Buy low miles and have Toyota dealer inspect it for you for $95 or so. Take the car to highway for a test drive and test the brakes. Make sure the steering wheel is straight and does not pull or shake when you brake. I recommend Edmunds.com buying tips and market values ( When evaluating, I always choose "clean" option). Good luck buddy.

I'd buy new

If you can afford to buy new, then by all means do so. Why risk your dollars on someone else's junk. Buying used is always a crapshoot, and most of time it can work in the buyers favor, but buying new you know what you got from the outset.

How many miles did your car have when the water pump went out? Are others having water pump problems?

It's still snowing and blowing, this sucks!!!

34K. They usually just leak very slowly. Yes, several people have had waterpumps leak.

Warmer temps are only a few days away!

Did Toyota have a fix for this or will I need to put in 12 water pumps (34,000 X 12 = 408,000 miles)? I usually get 90,000-120,000 miles from the aftermarket water pumps in my Honda. Any talk of an upgrade? Any aftermarket pumps?

I don't like to work on cars, otherwise I would own a Chevy. I'm just trying to pick the correct make/model.

Thanks again, BG

Mine is leaking quite a bit earlier than normal. I wouldn't sweat it. Most people don't have that problem, but it's not rare either.

Welcome to TN

I'd say you'd be good with an 08-09 camry.
Their engines are actually ranked up higher than they've ever been.
go for the SE package!
I'm regretting not having gone with the SE... but I'm good.
good luck!

GET A CAMRY! GEN 6's are nice

there's no difference between the '07's - 09's so i would pick the '07 if i was you and save money while still getting that new car feeling.

^^ Yea I think your best bet would be to buy an 08 or 09 camry. My dad has an 08 camry LE and I have an 04 camry LE. With my experience driving both I would have to say go with a Gen 6 Camry. They look much better than the previous gen camry's, nice interior, engine is also quiet nice and the pick up is better. Although I love my 04 camry, I feel attracted to my dad's 08 camry. Get the SE model...they look real sexy IMO.

I have an 03 camry -- gen 5, I'd say I like gen 5's a lot better, but the gen 6's w/body kits are starting to grow on me. But when they don't have the lips and side skirts, they look like they are missing a piece and doesn't appeal too much to my taste.

I'm going to drive my 03 until it dies heh, and after, i'm going to pick up another camry.

I wasn't aware of any big difference in Gen 5 I4's and Gen 6 I4's. Please explain yourself. I'd really like to know where this better pick up comes from, considering that they have the same 2.4L engines.

I've owned 10 cars and trucks, none of them new. If you just get a car that is 2 or 3 years old, you get to let someone else pay the depreciation. You will buy a great car and somebody else has already worked out all the bugs for you.

The only used car lemon i ever got was 20 years ago i bought a used 1980 VW Rabbit for $2000. Biggest POS i ever owned, would never EVER buy a VW again, not even a new one...all the others were nissans and toyotas. And drove all of them way over 100,000 saved lots of money, and incurred no major problems that werent caused by my own stupidity.
