5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
so recently when i turn on the car the radio just stays blank, like the welcome message won't appear anymore and i can't change the station, eject cd or do anything.. but after a little while like 2-3 minutes the functionality will come back on...now im not sure if it is just a weak battery or something..has anyone else experienced this?
also i do have an amp, subs, and hids hooked up to the battery as well so could all that plus normal functions be over-draining the battery?
Two things to learn here. First, the battery stores electricity, sort of like a big capacitor. It is designed to release energy very quickly to spin the starter motor which starts the engine and activates the alternator. The alternator then provides all the electrical needs of the car as well as recharging the battery. If you have electrical devices connected which meet or exceed the capacity of the alternator then the battery is going to drain off as well and the next time you try to start it the battery will be depleted so it isn't going to start.
Now to the radio. I rather doubt it has anything at all to do with the other loads on the system assuming the engine is running and the alternator is operating properly. More likely is the possibility that in the process of wiring stuff up you failed to connect something 'very well' or you have a slightly loose connection somewhere or a loose ground. Also it is possible that the alternator or regulator is going south and the voltage is low. Using a volt meter I would monitor the voltage at the battery and then check the voltage at the radio and see if you have a substantial drop, say more than .5 volt. If immediately after starting the voltage at the radio is well below spec then it might not come on, and if it takes a while for the voltage to come back up then you have other issues. The radio might just be a symptom.
Finally, it might be an issue with the ignition system. Are there other accessories operating in that position that function properly when the radio is not? If everything is off then it might point to a more centralized problem.

If your problem is consistent, I'm guessing that it's the stereo itself. If it was a connection/wiring problem you would think that it would act up while driving when connections are being stressed from hitting bumps.
I always buy my stereos from a guy who sells em out of his trunk in front of the bar. I find they are a tremendous value as you can get a blaupunkt for $50. Some of them have funny tool marks on them but nonetheless, they're always a real value. Them and the $40 ones from walamrt.

And what does that nonsense contribute to the thread? Exactly, no more than this unnecessary post

..............actually, I have the same problem in my 2007 SE w/JBL system. I find that the Bluetooth does not connect sometimes, the radio display is blank sometimes, on other occasions the radio displays the normal info (minus BT) but none of the controls work. I actually have to pull over, turn off the ignition, then turn back on and it works. My only modification is the USA-Spec iPod interface. When I get time, I'll remove that and see what happens.
On a side note, I notice much dust under the radio display.
