I'm not sure what size he will be buying. I'm thinking its the same size as my car 215/55/17.

We tested my rims on his Tacoma and worked great! Checked turn-to-turn and no issues with rubbing/hitting any suspension components.
Eric.

I take it his Dad has a 2wd, so chances are he's going for the "sport" look 225/55R(or 50)-17

Yes, it's a 2wd and he wants it to look somewhat sporty.

Yes, it's a base model Tacoma. He is retired and didn't need anything more than this truck.
Eric.

You are also sure that he has the 5 lug, not the 6 lug bolt pattern right? IMO a truck running 215/55/17 is going to look weird, just like the base model previous gen Tacoma's, although I may be wrong when they are installed.
Be sure to post some pics!

The rims look good, but I'd go with some larger tires.

Not sure, I have 235's on a 7.5" rim though.
I meant he should get tires with more of a sidewall.
