5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
You won't get any noticeable performance gains or increases with just a muffler (which will sound the most quiet when compared with a full cat-back exhaust setup). Just get a muffler if you're looking for a more aggressive and slightly louder sound than stock.
If you want some performance, you may want to consider headers, high flow cat, larger piping, etc. It will definitely be louder than stock though, and I don't think that's what you're looking for. There isn't much you can do in terms of performance when modding the exhaust.
I just found another post here on the boards about the Areo exhaust.
The resolution seems to be .... There isnt one and to find a noiseless muffler that is good on MPG and performance....is impossible.
I guess i'm sticking with the stock exhaust and adding an intake.
Are chips available for these cars?
Adding an intake will also increase noise...
There is one, more expensive option, which is to sound deaden the entire car to reduce the noise from outside... but the weight of the material may cancel out any performance gains
Chips/ECU upgrades are essentially a waste of money on a N/A car without significant other performance enhancements to make the change in ECU programming effective. This would include, at a minimum IMO:
intake, moderate to major exhaust upgrade (header and the like) and fuel system (lines, filters, etc...) and possibly a throttle body with large diameter.
Look at it this way, the ECU upgrade is going to adjust the way your car's computer tells the systems to react to the sensors telling it how much and what temp air, how much fuel and how the 'waste' is moved out of the car. Without a significant upgrade to these values beyond what the stock car expects you won't get much out of changing the program.
At least that is how I learned it when putting ECU money into my turbo cars. Perhaps someone like TRD-VVTI or another more knowledgable member can shed light and/or correct me.

Well adding Dual exhaust to L4 is pretty pointless. I'll admit it looks great, but only on some cars (tC, that Hyundai car i can't think of). Adding dual without doing anything to the exhaust, is a waste of money.

I'm looking for a stock sounding(or close to it) exhaust that will increase the performance on my 09' I4 SE.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Adding a second factory muffler like lammydi or njerald did might give you a couple more horsepower. That's about the only way that I can think to do it without making the car louder.
Chips are useless. The ECM doesn't actually have a removable chip in it. The performance chips being sold are just resistors that actually accomplish nothing at all. Don't be ripped off by getting one.
You don't need to replace the intake. The factory intake works perfectly. Simply install a TRD or K&N air filter.

what about replacing the oem camry muffler with another oem muffler of better design (maybe a less-restrictive v6 or v8 muffler i.e. supra oem? now that was the only other way that i thought of, even if it only added .2 hp, in addition to increasing pipe diamter from cat-back by a quarter inch and with mandrel bends (even though the oem crush bends aren't extremely restrictive).

That sounds reasonable, but there isn't much to be gained from the cat-back.
