Gen5 Rough idle - "check engine" light

2004 Camry SE v6 3.3 stock 51k

This is second hand information because this always happens to the wife!

She started the car after at the store and the idle was rough. She tried to drive and it continued to be rough, she calls me and I tell her to park it and I come to the rescue.

When I get there the car runs fine but the check engine light is on. I was able to "goose" the car and get the idle to drop below 500 and it was rough. But normal driving seems to be fine with the exception of the check engine light on.

I'd like to look for the obvious before taking to a wrench. Any suggestions would be great. It was 9:30 PM when this happened so the car is at home and I have yet to start on it. I was thinking the obvious like air or fuel. We did gas it that morning but it was at the same station we normally gas at and we use 93 oct.

with my limited knowledge, it could be one of many sensors malfunctioning...

try to take it to an autozone or something similar where they can scan the CEL,.. then when you get the code there are plenty of brains around here that can give you a good synopsis

Thanks for the replies.

Changed it to Gen5

I always forget about HF. They had their $79 CIL reader for $39. Turns out it was the number 2 cylinder misfire. I pulled the coil pack and the plug, it looked fine. Other than a dirty air filter I not sure what else to do. Even then, you'd think an air filter to fuel filter would cause problems on all of them.

Any other suggestions before it goes to the shop?

Just a dumb idea but why not follow the troubleshooting steps in your factory Service Manual starting with the spark plug and spark??????????

I thought I'd close this thread, I took the car to the Star Toyota to have it looked at. They tested the coil pack, injector, and the spark plug - they all tested fine. There were under 40 misfires for #2 and the tech thought it was could have been something in the injector. I paid an extra $30 to have the EFI cleaned out. The tech also switched the coil packs from #2 to #4. Just in case the problem returns, we'll have a better idea what it might be.

The car did have some hesitation on accel. No more, the car runs better than it ever did. (2nd owner @35k)

At $39 each, I think I'll put a CIL reading in each car!

Thanks for your input,
