5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I drive a 2003 SE I4 with 55,000miles and do probably 70% highway driving and 30% city. I must admit that my mileage on this car has been dismal...best I have ever gotten to a tank is a hair over 400 miles. What ever happened to this engine getting 33 or 34MPG? I know the EPA figures are just a jumping off point, but looking at my calculations my BEST tanks don't even break 25MPG.
Admittedly I can drive a little aggressively sometimes but again, I have tanks where I really try to cool it and I still manage 23 or 24 miles to the gallon. I also never ever run the A/C but do often have the radio on. Highway I go about 68 or 70. Temps lately are in the 70s.
Worse yet, my mileage lately seems to be more horrible than ever. I have about 320 miles on the car and the fuel gauge is just above E...again this has been mostly highway driving.
All of this considered, I have noticed that with rising gas prices my local gas station has gone from 5 to 7 to now 10% ethanol. I feel like as my mileage has decreased, the ethanol content has increased. Am I just looking for excuses here or is there any legitimacy to this?
Also, is my mileage horrible or is this just what I should expect? I sold my 4Runner so that I could get better gas mileage...but this truthfully isnt much better!
From my perspective, your gas mileage isn't that bad. I go on Highways and Local and I can't even pass the 300miles mark. The most I can get is 280miles. I wish the camry was lighter, that would probably make a difference.

more ethanol = lower gas mileage. You really should to try to be more accurate on your mpg calculation. This is how you do it: Fill the tank to full and reset trip a, drive until empty, fill it the tank again but noting the numbers of gallons filled, calculate mpg by gallons filled / trip a miles

I have tried to run the tank as empty as possible. Filled all the way up, started a new trip, and ran it about 20 miles past the gas light being on. Never can get above around 415 miles.
I know your method is more accurate but I just can't believe that there is SUCH a huge discrepancy between the EPA numbers and where my car is at. At this rate, I feel like I should maybe get another car. For ~23mpg combined, there are plenty more powerful and more fun cars that you could own.
And heck, some of the Gen6 V6 guys get similar or better gas mileage.
those numbers sound right to me, especially with you saying you tend to drive agressively at times.. The way you drive makes a HUGE difference in your gas mileage. Also, how fast are you going on the highways? It has been proven that going above 60mph will drastically drop your gas mileage. Try changing your driving style. Smooth accelerations and braking, think smart driving(ie: if you see the light changing, take your foot off the gas and just coast to the light), use your cruise control on the highway etc.

if what you said is true, then you probably had 3-4 gallons left in the tank. 420 miles / 15 gallons = 28 mpg
Make sure your car is properly taken care of: fuel filter, inflated tires, clean fuel injectors... as cars get older, expect it not to perform quite like its new.

I keep the car in top shape...tire pressure, oil changes, fuel system cleaners, all scheduled maintenance. Only thing I can think of is that the 4AT burns a LOT of gas if you go anything over 55 or 60. Even then, I go 67 or 68 on the highway and almost always use cruise control. Not sure if the 05s and 06s get better gas mileage with the 5AT?
I work at a Lexus dealership and drive LS 460s that average better than what I do!
Yes, that will get you a real low number..........................
What are you talking about. That's the accurate way of calculating mpg. Gallons filled / Trip A miles driven since last fill up. For me, it'll be something like 450 miles / 15.5 gallons = 29 mpg with mixed highway / local.

Read your post again, maybe you can figure it out the 3rd time!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone notice the op's problem though. Sounds like he's calculating mpg by miles driven since last fill up / 18.5 gallons. When the empty light comes on, you still have 3-4 gallons left in the tank!
