5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My wife and I went and looked at new cars this past weekend and she really liked the camry. I thought it was nice and i drive a '98 myself. She wants to get rid of her '02 Yukon because it sux gas. Anyway, I was talking to a friend who is a tech at the toyota dealership and he said the new camrys have a problem with collecting water in the a/c box and causing water leaks and smell. He said that toyota wasn't taking care of customers with this problem either. I have had great luck with toyotas in the past but thought I would ask you guys since you have first hand experience with the new model. I don't want to finance a car for 5 years and have a bunch of problems with it.
Let me know what you think or let me know of any other problems that I should be aware of. Thanks.
alost 8k in the 4-5 months i have had mine no problem, and i have been avering 27-29 mpg (after 2k miles, time i alloted for break in) in my 4 cyc auto se w/ trd 18's i say go for it.
had my 08 camry se v6 since december. no problem with anything so far although the AC does smell a little bit from time to time. but not enough for me to complain about it.

We've had about three people in here who have thought that some A/C odor they've had should result in some kind of lemon-law replacement of their vehicles. The other 99.9% of us in here have not had any problem with A/C odor whatsoever.

I will find out soon...bought my car in the winter (no A/C used) and now move to Southeast-Florida . Already got my car transpo quotes . Hope it will be just fine...but probably will change my habit and switch it off a bit earlier before parking the car (when I remember).

That's all you need to do to avoid A/C odor. Just blow fresh air through it for a little while before parking it -- let it dry out a little bit. Such a simple concept, and it's been common-sense knowledge since the beginning of vehicular air-conditioning systems. I have been utterly astonished by the few folks who have refused to be responsible enough to take this one simple, little action.
Thanks for all of the quick responses guys. Maybe I will get the camry afterall. My wife was really disappointed when I told her we may not get it. By the way, it is an LE 4 cylinder. The dealer is looking for one that is either blue or dark grey with a moonroof. Any thing else I should add to it from the dealer if we buy it??? Maybe aluminum wheels and a spoiler??? I am hoping there are some rebates coming up in May.

What do you do on a short trip down to the grocery? Not enough water build up to be an issue?

Look for options you like and which are hard or impossible to add later (like moonroof and VSC). Wheels and spoiler are easy to get and add on later - and it's cheaper.

Maybe SE model?
If you are more concern about safety, then get the package with VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) and Traction Control (TRAC). I will also consider Aluminum rims or maybe get a better looking rims from other place. There are some threads posted by TN members with some nice looking rims pictures in it. Dig around those threads, I think those are helpful.

Yep, think about getting an SE, instead. I think anyone would prefer the SE seat to the other seats, at the least. And it lets you get into a black interior, if that appeals to you. (Does to me.)
if you're a lot taller than your wife and both of you share the same car, get a camry standard instead. it has manual seats which you can adjust faster than the snoring speed of the power seats. its easier to add keyless than replace the drivers seat.

Mhm, good point. I have that from time to time and it does take some time. But what I am really missing on the seat options is a memory function, best would be combined with the two remotes. Even Ford has it that the 2 remotes can be programmed to adjust for the individual user, i.e. I had seat, mirrors, and even pedals adjusted the moment you press the door opener - 2 remotes, 2 settings. That is nice - I am missing it. Your post reminded me on that - sorry for thread hijacking.
Thanks again for all the ideas guys. My wife will be driving the car most of the time and she likes the le just as much as the se so i may as well save myself some money. They found us one in dark grey with a moonroof, spoiler and aluminum wheels. Now i gotta jew em down on the price a little b/c they only want to give me $8500 for my 02 yukon but they want retail for the camry. That was when my wife was talking to them anyway. They will have to sharpen their pencil a little before I buy anything.
