Gen5 Problem with ignition

Today I experienced the weirdest thing when I went to move my mom's 2002 LE 4cyl. I turned the car on and after it was started, I pulled on the key chain and the key popped out of the ignition. I put the key back in and turned the engine off. I restarted the car, and again the key just slid out when I pulled on it. Has anyone with a Gen 5 encountered this problem?

I haven't.

The lock cylinder is worn. See if you can turn it without putting the key all the way in. If it does, I'd get the lock cylinder replaced.

I had a car that did the same thing once. You had to have the key to start it, but then you could remove the key while the lock cylinder was iin the on position. I thought that it was very convenient.

I actually have this issue, but love it -- I can take out my keys and go to my mail box while the car is on and get my mail =P -- seriously I do that

Mail? Hell, I found it useful to get beer out of the trunk with the car still running...

Hah, I had the same "feature" on my 1970 corolla. I couldn't start it without the key, but it slid out. Lots of convenient uses.
