Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Just ranting I just spent about a half hour and 2 trips to the auto store and still the oil filter wont come off. I bought a oil wrench and it didn't fit in the area of the filter so no go, then i bought the adapter for my socket set and that kept slipping off. It fits the fram filter I am putting in but the toyota one must be a bit smaller. The thing is so damn tight.
Any help on hwo you guys first changed your oil, im trying to avoid bringing it to toyota or a oil place but it seems I am going to have to.
The first oil change on my I4 was bad. I think Robocop was putting the filters on at the factory! I actually had to buy a cap wrench that was a little smaller than the filter and hammer it on. Then I used my breaker bar to remove it.

Someday I will list my mods here
i'd be wary of getting those thin steel stamped filter wrenches... they often are not the right size.
assenmacher makes a set for toyota, they work really well. I use them on my 05 camry, my dad's 99 sienna, and my mom's 01 rx300. i've taken oil filters off all 3 vehicles with no troubles, and they were on damn tight!
I have no idea why the factory puts those filters on so damn tight. I would guess they don't want any chance of leakage and also they won't be the ones taking it off. They're probably workers in the factory saying, I bet I can install my filter tighter than yours...with impact wrenches in hand.
Buy a filter end cap and drill holes into it. Pound nails into the holes while it's on the oil filter so you will get good grip on the oil filter. Tp clarify, the nails will go into the filter cap and into the oil filter

The idea is to NOT destroy your filter. I mean, what IF you gave up and had to take it somewhere.
A band wrench and sandpaper, thats all it takes. If it slips (with a band wrench) you arent muscling enough. If you are muscling it, and the handle bends in the direction you are prying, THEN its on too tight.
stupid question....you are turning it in the counter clock-wise direction, right? I know I know, but i've done dumb shit too...just outside looking in...
I've never had an oil filter I couldnt get with a band wrench or filter pliers. Not even the big mofo on a diesel truck (the vibration causes them to get really tight - think impact gun).
i just use a simple set of filter pliers i got from cornwell for like 20 bucks....
never failed on me...
btw, why are you using a fram filter? theyre supposidly one of the worst filters one can use...id at least use a purolator, mobil, napa gold or wix if i wasnt using the OEM toyota ones i use...
