5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
But I really want to know what is the purpose of trying to turn a Camry into a "fast car"?
There is this "punk" (for lack of better term) with a loud pipe and some obvious mods to his 2007 Camry. Pulls up next to a Mustang at the light, revs his engine. The mustang ignores the dude. The guys starts lurching forward. The dude in the mustang getting annoyed. The light turns green the Camry spings. The Mustang gives him at least two seconds and then “BOOM” he is gone! The kid in the Camry actually looks disappointed at the next light???? I am like WTF?
I just wanted to ask the kid, dude, this is a family car NOT a speedster. Sure you can dump a ton of money into the car and get some speed but at the end of the day it is still a camry. You know a Camry like my grand ma drives.
Sooo, did this guy actually think he had a chance? Cmon, was really hilarious.
Don't get me wrong Camry's are nice, but speed demons they are not.
I am sure it was a 6, it had some gumption but would never take that stang. Not saying the car was a slug but cmon . . .
The Camry was nice . . . a little overdone for my taste. He had dropped some coin on the car that is for sure. I could see brembo brakes, looked almost like an intercooler on the front when he turned. 20 inch wheels lowered and custom front grilll. Headlights looked like a conversion to BMW type headlights - real Xeons.

i'm offended with you terminology....choose your words carefully...
Looked pretty much stock . . . did not seem to have any major mods that I could see. Exhaust sounded like a normal GT. I am sure it (Camry) was a v6 now way 4 could move like that.
All I am saying is that a Camry is a Camry and a mustang is a mustang. I hate fords BUT I have seen a plenty of mustangs eat some Shiat up and spit them out . . .
Fast and family should probably not co-exist. Especially hauling the kids around. That is just my .02, I am sure others will disagree.
Bottom line is a Camry is considered a Sedan NOT a sports car.

I do not agree with most of what you have stated. I previously owned a 2000 Camaro Z28 and that was a fast car. However, the 07-up Camry V6s can stay pretty much even through the quarter mile with the previous generation Mustang GTs with a V8, and can beat even the new V6 Mustangs.... I have to say, that is an impressive feat considering one is a 4-door family sedan and the other is a 2-door sports car. While the Camry can't even touch the Mustang handling-wise, on straight-line performance, it wouldn't take that much to get a current gen Camry V6 to compete with a current gen Mustang GT. All the while carrying all your groceries and having 5 people in the car!
Hell, I know a guy with a Ford Pinto that is street legal and runs 12 second quarter miles. There is another guy with a 1960s VW Bug that runs 11s. Just because it is technically not a "sports car" doesn't mean it isn't fast.
By the way, I am not trying to attack what you are saying by any means. Just stating my opinion.

I'm sure A LOT will disagree... of course you're going to drive with care when anyone else is in the car...
Try telling that to all the automakers... especially the one's who make sport sedans... no matter what you think... automakers are going to keep on increasing HP, because that sells...
I wouldn't say a regular mustang is a sports car either... its a coupe, like camry is a sedan... it just refers to the body style 2dr vs 4dr

hmmmm...not to be in negation or anything, but if so, then do you think that bmw with their M-division, mercedes benz with their amg line, audi with their s-line, all made errors? sales prove otherwise and there's no reason why you can't have a fast family sedan.
driver knowledge, driving habits, and road rage are still the biggest factors. like they always say, the most dangerous part of any car is the nut driving behind the wheel.

Good point!!
I had an M Series, but Mercedes and BMWs handling is night and day over a Camry. Those cars are built from the ground up and designed to handle high speeds. Shoot they come with sooooo much "camber" (think that is the right one) in their alignment to handle the high speed. Sure you can modify a camry BUT don't think you can compare a simple suspension mod to the engineering genius of a benz or bimmer. If you have never owned one, please don't comment. You just can't know until you have had one.
BMW and Benz are higher priced for a number of reasons. Would not buy them again, but DAMN!!!!
Lol, back ~2001 there were several guys who had Gen 3 Camry's that had 200-300 HP. This is one of the cleanest Camry's ever and it wasn't near the fastest: http://www.angelfire.com/sd2/1996camry/index.html
