Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
so my friend just installed an exhaust on his STi. sounds like a typical sti nothing special but he took his cat converter off. i was wondering wat the pro's and con's are of doing that. of course the sound gets louder but wat else? i was wondering if i should do that to my camry. anyone have any suggestions? ideas? personal experience? thoughts? threats? flames? hahhaha anything is fine
Leave the cat in - its their for another purpose than just sound. If you want a louder exhaust - take the resonator out. That just increases the dB a bit w/o any harm to the catalytic converter function (it's a filter!!).
In Oz, if you get busted with your CAT removed, it's over $10k fine, I am sure you guys in the states would have similar fines for sure, I wouldn't be doing it personally.
well when i went to get my mufflers done a while ago, the guy there said that all cars made after 95 or something had high-flow cats. o.O maybe i heard it wrong. buy any reccomendation on which cat to get? and well it affect sound? again pro's and cons please.
With it off, you lose a lot of back pressure, hence good if you go FI
Flow is smoothed out
Sound gets louder (raspy)
Earth dies a little quicker
if you want to do anything to your cat... get a hi-flow
how does it make the car lose a lot of back pressure? how is flow smoother? the cat does not effect any noise level but it is bad for the environment... btw the stock cat is not that restrictive. back pressure is negligible on a na car so even if mildly fi'ed the cat doesn't need to be switched out. taking out the cat does not change the exhaust tone, the resonator, diameter piping, and muffler does. but then again this is nothing technical just like the thread about the top speed right?
and to simplify, u wont get passed for inspection correct? iono
but yea even for a newb (me) i wouldnt recommend or think about taking out my cat, resonator maybe (might take it off tomorrow) but yea, a cat-less setup is never a good way to go, street wise
