I just started to pull a utility trailer with an 04 Camry Le l4. No issue with the car pulling about 1100lbs at 55 mph. I switched off the overdive as recommended in the owners manual and was expecting the torque converter to still lock up when cruising speed was reached, but it never did. Isn't it supposed lock up with the overdrive turned off? I only feel the 1st to 2nd shift and 2nd to 3rd, no other drop in RPM after that. Comments?

You've been driving it for 3+ years and you don't know what RPM you are doing at speed in top gear and/or overdrive?
dont worry so much about njerald he always seems to make smartass comments. but anyways, it must be because of how much weight u have on the car? when i hauled a trailer it went up to 4th gear, the car had 5 gears but i guess at that gear it wont be so "buff". not too sure on wat to tell ya but you shouldn't be hauling stuff on your camry haha.

How do you know it didn't lock up?
What was your RPMs when you got up to cruising speed?
Seriously, your lack of information makes me suspect a lack of knowledge regarding the subject gives you cause for concern. Posting the differences that you are experiencing would be more accurate and helpful.

Let's start over, my apologies for previous comments. I have extensive experience working on cars, yes backyard mechanic. I had recently replaced a transmission in an older GM with a newer one requiring a re-work of the wiring for the torque converter lock up feature. The car needed either an add-on microprocessor or toggle and vacuum switch to control the lock up, or have it happen at the desired time. I know when they lock up or when they don't. Back to the Camry: With or without pulling a trailer, the torque converter does not lock up with the OD turned off. For sure. The is only two shifts 1-2, 2-3 the RPM is over 3000 at 60 mph. The RPM goes up about 300 instantly if you load up the engine and goes back down if you just cruise, there is no locking or unlocking it's just slipping. Turn off the OD and two 'shifts' happen: 4th gear and the locking of the torque converter, now your down to about 2300 RPM. The transmission works fine, I just need to know if the torque converter is supposed to lock in third gear?
I don't want to drive long distances in third if the lock up doesn't happen, it can overheat the oil in some cases, I"ll just pull the trailer in OD and downshift with the button on hills etc.

Suggest you drive the car from 0 to 50ish MPH. Watch the tach, the torque converter should lockup around 37 MPH more or less. You should see a small drop in RPM perhaps 5%.
I don't know if you have control over the lockup on this trans, this is typically based on trans fluid pressure.
You do have control over the O/D as such just keep it off when towing. If worried about over temp you can install a temp fluid sensor or keep an eye on the trans fluid color.
Also, think about installing an after market trans cooler, this is cheap insurance if doing a lot of towing.
Thank you, the advice I was looking for. I had been considering installing an oil cooler for the tranny, I will also investigate a temp gauge. I experimented with the car a bit yesterday, no lock-up in third. I will try again with your instuctions in mind. If I recall, my son had a Mazda Protege that did not lock either unless the OD was on. The old GM I worked on would lock up at the first-second shift after I replaced the transmission with a newer one, causing the engine to lug if you accelerated lightly; it would chirp the tires If your foot was down a bit more, not smooth. I routed the wire to a toggle swith on the dash and just left shut down until I reached highway speeds, but that was an old ugly car. I had installed an oil cooler on it too, the oil stayed clean looking for years.

isn`t the gen 4 and 5 automatic tranny a 4 speed?

I've found some type of semi-service manual in .pdf but it mentions nothing about the pinouts. Also is there any known way to get this transmission to shift in, what would be the "Economy" program, as this 97 drives like it's stuck on Sport... it holds gears ridiculously long and is too sensitive to downshift and hold gears again I have to always let up off the pedal for one second to get it to upshift when i wants, which kinda sucks. And sometimes when i let up off the pedal and get back on it, it'll downshift right back again! Maybe given the engine and vehicle weight combo, Toyota permanently wired the logic into the 'power' mode....
