Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Is it normal for the pedal on a 2009 SE V6 Camry to become firm the second time you hit it?
The second time in a row that I depress my brakes, the pedal becomes firmer than when you hit them from the first time. The dealer told me this is the booster kicking in the second time...
Thoughts?

Well the car blew the master cylinder in the first 100 miles. I am paranoid now since this happened. This could very well be a normal condition and I am bothered by it because of my poor track record with this Toyota.
The car has 502 miles on it now.

Get the cylinder fixed and hopefully you wont have anymore problems.
I wouldn't judge the quality of the Camry for a 'freak' thing like that.
Yeah, you blew a master cylinder in the first 500 miles of the car....I bet it won't happen again within the next 10 years unless you are driving like Mario Andretti.

The cylinder has been fixed for two weeks. This is what I have noticed after the fix, but have nothing to compare it to because the cylinder was busted from the factory.
Can anybody else compare to their Camry?

maybe theres air in the lines and the system wasnt evacuated properly when the master cylinder was replaced?
id take it to the dealer and complain of the issue just to be safe....i see the master cylinder as a freak failure, but if this isue concerns you id look into it, as it might be the result of technican error

The dealer told me the condition is normal. So going back there without any further reason will probably be a waste.

Take a test drive in another copy of the same car and see if it acts the same way. I doubt that it will. Go back to service and tell them you just drove another car, it didn't act this way, and that you want it checked. If there was air in the line I'd think it would be more mushy than hard. What you are describing is more likely a vacuum leak of some sort. You might want to check the hose to the servo yourself and see if it is attached properly. I'd raise cain about this myself with so few miles and since it is a safety issue, they are fools if they don't attempt to address the issue.

I am going to drive another 09 tomorrow. Still, if somebody could observe their brakes in a 07+ Camry, I would be curious if you notice a firmer pedal when you press the pedal a second time.

Well I am no expert (some might chime in on that ), but mine feels the same. Tested it a few times today and did not recognize any change to get firmer the second time or any other time - 08 with A/T.
Its normal, a lot of cars do it. I've heard things ranging from brake boost to reserve cylinder kicking in. My Camry does it, and my Highlander does it.

You are right. I drove a 2009 Camry SE V6 built the same period mine was with 5 miles on it today. The brakes acted the exact same way. Even the "thunk" when you release your foot off the pedal quickly.
I am just paranoid because of the master cyl. dieing in the first 100 miles. The dealer fixed it correctly and was right when they said the condition was normal.
