Wheel Hop

Hey all, I have been browsing this forum for awhile now. Started reading a bit before I bought my 07 Camry 5 weeks ago (still not sure if I paid a little too much, but oh well).

Anyway, I will get to the point.

After a few weeks of driving I noticed that when I get a little frisky with the acceleration I run into some pretty severe wheel hop. I can't really get the wheels to spin, they go from some chirping to full blown hopping.

I am assuming that there is nothing really wrong with the car, just something that comes with a FWD sedan that has ~268 HP (weight shifting and all, damn physics ) and my lead foot. Regardless, I am curious if any of you know the best way(s) to reduce the hopping as much as possible? Also, if it is not normal that would be great to know as well .

I did a quick search and couldn't come up with any Camry posts pertaining to wheel hop.
Thanks,

Matt

Mine hops like mad when you get on it. I don't think it's abnormal. I just learned to feather on the power.

Why does the OP need to dig up a thread from last year ? If he did so, would you say "good work! the thread is one year old " ?

Sorry... his question was NOT covered in that thread
So it's legitimate...

Pardon my inexperience with FWD cars but... On my previous car, a 2000 Camaro Z28 (V8 RWD), it had moderate wheel hop. Nothing as bad as my Camry V6 FWD now, but still annoying. Everyone suggested I get replacement lower control arms and after I installed them, it completely solved the wheel hop problem.

I don't expect to solve the problem completely on this FWD setup, but is there such a thing as lower control arms (or similar) on these Camrys that could be replaced to at least help with the problem?

in order to stop wheel hop, you need to get engine torque dampers and traction bars... both of which are not available for our cars, so the best way is to just ease on the gas, no need to launch, especially with gas prices the way they are

Alright guys thanks for the responses, shame that it can't be reduced due to the lack of after market parts for our car.

I understand that a the Camry is not a performance car or what not but it is a very popular, high volume, car so you would think there would be at least a decent after-market customer base.

Also, njerald, I read that thread and while it does address that is in normal no one touches on the topic of how to reduce/eliminate it.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

-Matt

PS. The tires that came with the car are Yokohama Avid V4s, I assume that they are letting me give it a bit more gas before it starts to hop?

That's odd. I've never seen a 4th Gen Fbody have wheel hop completely eliminated with just rear lower control arms. LCA relocation brackets usually helped the most, followed by a heavy duty torque arm that didn't flex as much as the stamped steel torque arm. Even so, there still would be massive wheelhop in reverse. Hell, mine used to wheel hop so bad the decklid would hit the quarter panels. After installation of the Hotchkis rear LCA's and panhard bar it still did it (not as badly). An Edelbrock torque arm helped even more, but it was still there. LCA relocation brackets eliminated the problem completely (except reverse of course).

I doubt that anyone will make performance lower control arms for a V6, FWD, family passenger car. If they did, it would still wheel hop.

Glad to see another F-body owner/fan here! I didn't have much on my car: stock drivetrain, aftermarket intake/K&N filter, Flowmaster muffler + custom exhaust, BMR LCAs, BMR shock tower brace, and BMR subframe connectors. I had an automatic tranny and the slower 2.73 rear end gears which were not great for launching and didn't cause as much wheel hop as people with 3.23 or 3.42 gears.

Maybe the suspension stuff along with 2.73 gears allowed for just medium wheel hop while those with larger gears had more. All I know is that after the LCAs were installed, the wheel hop was 90%+ gone.
