5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I just started installing the Mod-Express 4300k kit on my car. I covered the squirrel spotters with JB Weld and a piece of aluminum from a soda can, then folded down the metal flap.
When it came time to put the H11 bulb in, the 3 little notches aren't the correct size! The kit that I ordered is 100% an H11 kit, but 2 of the three tabs are a little too wide and will not fit into the "slots" in the headlight assembly. Would it be safe to file then down with sandpaper a little to make them fit? Or is there a better way to make this work?
Isn't this the company that stated that they didn't manufacture their kits correctly with some bunk about how Camry H11's are "different" than other H11 bulbs (or something along those lines if I recall) ?
I just got a metal file at Lowe's. I think this should work a little better than sandpaper. My hands aren't the most steady so a dremel would probably not be the safest things for the bulb...
Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I will post the results of my install when I am done later tonight.
Ok, I filed down the 3 "tabs" on the bulb for both sides and the the bulbs went in pretty smoothly. Unfortunately, the bulbs were still a tight fit. I am not an expert in the area, but I would imagine that other cars that use H11 bulbs would have a similar problem but whatever...
I have a new problem that I need your help on. The instructions included in the Mod-Express kit are practically useless. Between the poor language and writing skills and the lack of H11 specific instructions, I am struggling to figure out how to utilize the relay and how to connect it to the battery. Please, does anyone have pictures of how the bulb connects to the ballast, how the ballast connects to the relay, and how the relay connects to the battery? I want to confirm that I have everything done properly.
It seems as though there are a lot of "extra" connections that don't go anywhere. For example, there are two small black and red wires with little metal connectors or something on the end that go nowhere. There is also an extra bulb connector on the bundle of cables that attaches to the bulb itself that I don't think connects to anything. Does this make sense?
After a bit of research I found some generic instructions on how to install the HIDs: http://www.mobilehid.com/support.htm . By the way, these instructions and pics are FAR better than the ones in the manual from Mod-Express!!!
Again, thanks for everyone's help. Once I know that everything I working properly, I will remove the extra connectors.
After reviewing the pics and instructions, everything seems to be connected the properly. Unfortunately, the headlights will not start up. The turn signals come on, but the HIDs do not light up. When I turn the headlight switch on, I hear a click noise that sounds like it came from the ballast but not sure.
I have checked every connection, disconnected and reconnected each connection to the battery, etc. Below are some pics of the wiring (sorry for the poor quality), the iPhone's camera sucks: http://www.flickr.com/photos/26729891@N06/

Can you guys tell me what I did anything wrong?
The click noise you hear is the relay activating. Check your polarity on the ballast power and ground connection. (i.e. if the power and ground is reversed on the ballast connection, it won't fire up) That's where I'd start. If you have a test light probe, that would be helpful for you to follow the power and ground through each connection of the relay harness to the ballast. From your other problems, it wouldn't surprise me if they wired it backwards somewhere. Everything else looks okay in the pictures from what I can tell.
Gotta love the high quality of HID kits...

let me see your relay connection that connects to the stock harness. Make sure it's the right polarity and make sure the metal pins make contact
In the pic below, you can see kinda see the relay connecting to the car's headlight harness. The cable with white and black wires that is sitting between the battery and the jumble of red/black wires. Sorry, that's the best pic I have at the moment since I am at work right now.
