Gen5 Painting Rs Grille

Hey guys! got my RS grille yesterday, but i wanted to repaint the chrome to my gun metal color, so it would look a lil cleaner, and may be a lil like that Sportivo grille. I have a question if anyone here actually repainted the grille themselves??? if yes then what did you use to take of the chrome, and what kind of paint, how much you used?

Thanks....

Use sandpaper to sand off the chrome.

After the chrome is gone sand with a fine grit, spray on primer, and sand again.

I would recommend Dupli Color paint if you're going to spray paint it. Some paints require clear also to get the right color and luster, so be sure to check that.

don't skimp on the prep work... after the primer is on and you sand, the surface has to be perfect, any imperfections, will show with paint...

as for the paint itself, you can use a rattle can or paint gun....

if you use automotive paint, there are 2 types...
1 step and 2 step... obviously the 2 step is with clear coat...
1 step is much cheaper....

i would try trd's suggestion with the rattle can, and if you don't like it you can always sand it off,

i painted my own body kit, but left my rs grille chrome... if you wanna try painting with a gun, let me know, i can give you some pointers...

good luck...

I got my stainless mesh from Lockwood International in the UK. It wasn't cheap then, and because of the current value of the dollar, is even more expensive now.

I too recently bought an rs grill for my gen 5. My camry is black so i painted it black to match. My steps in painting this grill is
-strip chrome with sand paper
-Three coats of black paint (1-2 hours in between)
-two coats of clear coat
Is my first time using spray can so is not perfect

I also replaced the mesh that came with it cuz it looked like the diamond gaps are too big.
When i install in on my car ill get another pic of it.
Enjoy!
